Some shotguns you buy to use, and some you buy to keep. The Citori Gran Lightning manages to be both. Browning dresses this one up with an oil-finished Grade V/VI walnut stock, a high polish blued receiver wearing deep relief engraving, and polished blued barrels set off by ivory front and mid beads. The rounded Lightning-style grip and matching forearm are the giveaway details here. That round knob puts your hand in the same spot every time you mount the gun, which pays off when a rooster flushes wild or a true pair comes off the trap.
Under the pretty wood is the same boxlock design that has kept Citoris swinging for generations. A transverse-mounted, full-width tapered locking bolt engages a matching tapered recess in the rear barrel lugs, and that taper lets the bolt seat a little deeper as the years go by, so the action stays tight instead of getting loose. The full-width hinge pin runs clear across the receiver, chambers are chrome plated to shrug off high volume shooting, and hammer ejectors kick out fired hulls while lifting unfired shells for easy removal. The single selective trigger lets you pick which barrel fires first with a flick of the tang selector.
The 28 inch vent rib barrels are back-bored, which reduces friction on the shot column for less pellet deformation and more even patterns downrange. Browning includes three Midas grade Invector-Plus extended choke tubes in Full, Modified, and Improved Cylinder, so you can set it up for skeet distances or late season birds without buying anything extra. The 3 inch chambers give you room for heavier field loads when the situation calls for it.
At a bit over 8 pounds, this 12 gauge carries enough weight to smooth out your swing on clays while staying manageable for a day of walking field edges. It is a working gun with heirloom looks, and there are not many of those left.
It genuinely does both well. The 28 inch back-bored barrels and roughly 8 pound weight give you a smooth, stable swing on sporting clays and skeet, while the rounded Lightning grip and classic field stock make it a natural in the uplands. The three included Midas grade chokes cover everything from close flushes to longer crossers.
