If you're serious about waterfowl and want something that shoots tighter patterns at distance than straight steel alone, the Browning Wicked Blend is worth considering. This load layers corrosion-resistant BB steel with number 1 bismuth shot in a 70/30 blend, giving you the best of both worlds. The size of the BB steel carries the velocity and energy you need at range, while the denser bismuth adds penetration and pattern density without bumping up to premium tungsten prices.
The blend concept works because bismuth is significantly denser than steel, which means those number 1 bismuth pellets hit with more authority than standard steel of the same size. Browning engineered this specifically so you get more consistent performance from the wider range of chokes people actually use. The Wicked Wad handles the mechanics with rear-stabilizing petals that keep the shot string from slinging while releasing cleanly through your choke, and a circumferential seal helps keep powder dry in rain and wet conditions.
Muzzle velocity clocks at 1450 fps out of a 3-inch shell with 1.25 ounces of shot, which is respectable energy from a standard magnum load. The combination of round, uniform shot pellets and the optimized wad design means patterns hold together better than you'd get from straight steel loads of equivalent payloads. Modified or Improved Cylinder chokes work best, though the design is solid enough to handle different constrictions without falling apart.
Each box contains 25 rounds, so you can pattern your gun properly and have enough left to put birds in the bag. The BB/1 combination is a sensible all-purpose choice for hunters who might see either ducks or geese on the same hunt. Browning's been in ammunition for a long time, and this load shows that attention to the details that actually matter in the field.
Bismuth is roughly 23% denser than steel, which means the number 1 bismuth pellets in this blend deliver more penetration and retained energy at distance compared to equivalent steel shot sizes. This blend lets you get performance closer to premium tungsten loads without the price. You're also getting improved pattern density because of how the two materials work together in the Wicked Wad.
Browning recommends Modified or Improved Cylinder chokes for best results. The Wicked Wad is engineered to handle different constrictions fairly well, but these recommendations give you the tightest, most consistent patterns from this load. Always pattern your shotgun with the choke and ammunition combination you plan to hunt with.
Unlike straight steel shot, bismuth is significantly softer and gentler on barrels, making it safer for vintage and fixed-choke shotguns that might take a beating from steel's hardness. However, always verify your firearm and choke tube ratings before shooting any ammunition, and make sure your gun is in safe working condition.
The BB/1 combination in this load is a sensible all-purpose choice for hunters who might encounter either species on the same hunt. BB steel handles geese well, while the number 1 bismuth provides better pattern density and penetration for ducks at reasonable distances. Pattern your specific gun to confirm performance.
