The receiver and 28-inch vent rib barrel wear Burnt Bronze Cerakote, the bore is fully chrome plated, and the composite stock carries Mossy Oak Shadow Grass Habitat camo with textured grip panels that stay put when your gloves are soaked. This is a gun that was designed in the blind, not the boardroom.
Unlike gas guns that dump powder residue into the action, the A5 runs on Browning's recoil-operated Kinematic Drive system. It cycles everything from light field loads up to heavy 3.5-inch magnums without the fouling buildup gas systems collect, and Browning backs it with a 100,000 round or five year guarantee. The 3.5-inch chamber gives you room for full-house goose loads when the big birds are riding high, and the 4+1 capacity keeps you in the game on a hot flight. The bolt, bolt slide, and shell carrier are Nickel Teflon coated for slick, corrosion-resistant operation.
Browning thought about the small stuff here. The Briley oversized bolt release is easy to hit with gloves on, and the fiber optic front sight paired with an ivory mid bead gives you a clean sight picture at first light. The famous humpback profile puts your eye on a long, flat sighting plane that makes swinging on crossing birds feel natural. An Inflex II recoil pad soaks up the punch of magnum loads, and the stock is shim adjustable for length of pull, cast, and drop, with quarter-inch and half-inch spacers in the box so you can dial the fit to your frame and your parka.
You get three extended Invector-DS Goose Band choke tubes in Full, Modified, and Improved Cylinder, plus an ABS hard case to haul it all. At around 7.2 pounds it carries well on long treks to the blind but has enough heft to smooth out your swing on passing shots.
The Kinematic Drive system is designed to cycle a wide range of loads, from standard 2.75-inch field and target loads up through heavy 3.5-inch magnums. Because it runs on recoil energy instead of gas, it stays cleaner over long shooting sessions too. Like most autoloaders, give it a few boxes of stouter loads to break in before running the lightest stuff.
It ships with three extended Invector-DS Goose Band tubes in Full, Modified, and Improved Cylinder. The Invector-DS system is a common thread pattern, so aftermarket waterfowl chokes from brands like Carlson's and Patternmaster are widely available. The included Modified tube is a solid all-around choice for steel shot over decoys.
Yes, the barrel is steel shot proven and built for exactly that job. The fully chrome-plated bore adds corrosion resistance for wet hunts, and the extended Goose Band chokes are rated for steel and other nontoxic loads. Just follow the standard rule of not shooting steel through a Full choke tighter than the tube is rated for.
Heavy 3.5-inch loads have real thump in any gun, but the Kinematic Drive action and Inflex II recoil pad work together to spread that impulse out noticeably. At roughly 7.2 pounds the gun has enough weight to help soak up magnum loads without being a chore to carry. Most hunters find it comfortable enough to shoot 3-inch loads all day.
