The A5 Upland in 20 gauge is one of the more anticipated shotguns to come out of Browning in years. This isn't just the 12 gauge platform bored down to a smaller hole — Browning built the 20 gauge on its own compact frame, which keeps the whole gun noticeably slimmer and trims meaningful weight from the carry. At under six pounds with a 28-inch barrel, it swings naturally and points fast, which matters a lot when a rooster is flushing at the end of a long cornfield walk.
The Kinematic Drive System is what powers the action, and it works the way any solid inertia system does — it uses recoil energy to cycle the bolt rather than tapping gas from the barrel. That means the action stays cleaner over the course of a hunting day, there's nothing to adjust between light field loads and heavier 3-inch shells, and the whole thing strips down quickly when you want to clean it. The chrome-lined chamber, back-bored barrel, and Vector Pro lengthened forcing cone all work together under what Browning calls Total Barrel Dynamics, and the net result is consistent, even patterns with the three included Invector-DS flush choke tubes. The Invector-DS system uses a double-seal design that keeps the threads cleaner and makes swapping chokes easier than older tube systems.
The Upland version gets the oil-finished Grade I Turkish walnut stock and the nickel-plated receiver with brushed contrasting sides — a cleaner, more classic look than the standard Hunter's blacked-out receiver. The 18-lines-per-inch hand-cut checkering gives you grip without going overboard on the fancy work. Fit is adjustable right out of the box with included shims that let you tune drop at comb, drop at heel, and cast to match your mount. Yes, the A5 Upland ships with a shim kit that lets you adjust drop at comb, drop at heel, and cast to better match your natural gun mount. It also includes 1/4" and 1/2" stock spacers for length of pull adjustments. For most hunters, getting the fit right before the season opens makes a real difference in how consistently you shoot.
The A5 Upland uses Browning's Invector-DS flush choke tube system, which is specific to the DS designation and not cross-compatible with the older Invector-Plus tubes. The gun ships with Full, Modified, and Improved Cylinder tubes. Browning and several aftermarket manufacturers offer additional Invector-DS 20 gauge chokes if you need specialty options like Extended or Steel Shot-rated tubes.
