The Browning BAR has been putting deer on the ground since 1967, and the MK4 Hunter is the most refined version of that autoloader yet. This one pairs the classic .30-06 Springfield chambering with a 22 inch fluted barrel in a non-reflective matte blued finish, a lightweight aluminum alloy receiver, and a synthetic stock dipped in Mossy Oak Bottomland camo. At roughly 7.1 pounds bare, it carries easily for a semi-auto in a full power cartridge, and the gas piston system takes real bite out of the recoil, which is a big part of why hunters have stayed loyal to this platform for almost sixty years.
Under the hood you get a seven-lug rotating bolt that locks directly into the barrel for consistent lockup shot after shot, plus an action bar and inertia block link-up that tames barrel vibration. An integral buffering system cuts wear on the operating parts, so this is a rifle built to cycle season after season. Feeding comes from a detachable box magazine on a hinged floorplate, giving you 4+1 capacity and the option to top off through the floorplate or swap mags outright. The gold-plated trigger breaks clean enough for anything you'll ask of a hunting rifle, and follow-up shots come quick when a buck doesn't drop on the first one.
The composite stock is where the MK4 earns its keep in rough weather. Bottomland camo disappears against hardwoods and marsh grass, rubber overmolded grip panels keep your hands locked on when things get wet, and the raised SoftFlex cheekpad lines your eye up naturally behind a scope. Included shims let you adjust cast and drop at comb so the rifle fits you instead of the other way around, and the Inflex recoil pad softens what little kick the gas system leaves behind.
The receiver comes drilled and tapped, so mounting a scope is straightforward, and QD sling cups make adding a sling painless. With a 1:10 twist stabilizing everything from 150 grain deer loads to 220 grain round nose, the .30-06 chambering covers whitetails, hogs, black bear, and elk without breaking a sweat.
Not compared to a bolt gun in the same cartridge. The gas piston operation soaks up a good chunk of the recoil impulse, and the Inflex pad handles the rest. It's one of the softer-shooting ways to run a .30-06, which is a big reason the BAR has stuck around this long.
Yes, the alloy receiver comes drilled and tapped from the factory, so all you need is a base and rings. There are no iron sights on this model, so plan on glass. The raised SoftFlex cheekpad on the stock is designed to put your eye right in line with a scope.
It uses Browning's hinged floorplate design with a detachable box magazine attached to it. You can drop the floorplate and top off the magazine in place, or remove the mag entirely and swap in a loaded spare. Capacity is 4 rounds plus one in the chamber.
It is. Browning includes shims that fit between the stock and receiver so you can tweak cast on/off and drop at comb to fit your build. Combined with the rubber overmolded grip surfaces, it's easy to get a comfortable, repeatable mount even in gloves or wet weather.
