The Black Rain Ordnance Spec15 A2 takes the classic carbine formula, the A2 front sight post, standard two-piece polymer handguard, G.I. style grip, and a six position collapsible stock, and builds it on Black Rain's Spec series foundation. That means aluminum upper and lower receivers with a hardcoat anodized finish, machined to the standards BRO has built its name on since 2009.
The heart of this rifle is a 16 inch chromoly steel barrel capped with an A2 flash hider and fed by a direct impingement gas system. Pair that with a black nitride coated bolt carrier group and you get a setup that cycles smoothly, cleans up easy, and holds up to high round counts without babying. The mil-spec G.I. trigger breaks clean enough for range work and drills, and since everything on this gun follows the standard AR pattern, swapping parts down the road is about as simple as it gets.
Chambered in 5.56 NATO, it happily digests .223 Remington too, so you have your pick of the most affordable and available centerfire rifle ammo out there. The Spec series uses a black nitride coated bolt carrier group. Nitride is a hard, slick surface treatment that resists wear and corrosion better than a standard phosphate finish, and it wipes clean with a lot less scrubbing after a long range session.
It is a strong pick for a first AR. The controls, trigger, and furniture all follow the standard mil-spec pattern, so any training material, spare parts, or upgrades made for the AR platform will apply.
