The Buck Mark has been Browning's rimfire workhorse since 1985, and the Camper UFX is the version built for people who just want to get out and shoot. This one wears a 5.5 inch stainless tapered bull barrel in a matte finish over a matte black receiver, and that little bit of extra weight up front does a nice job settling your hold on target without turning the pistol into a boat anchor. At 34 ounces total, it carries fine on a hike out to the back forty and still hangs steady on the bench.
The overmolded Ultragrip FX grips are the standout here. They're ambidextrous, so lefties get the same comfortable hold, and the stippled rubbery surface stays put when your hands are sweaty or the weather turns damp. The frame starts as a solid billet of aircraft-grade 7075 aluminum alloy and gets CNC machined to tight tolerances, which is a big part of why these pistols have such a reputation for consistency. Add in the crisp single-action trigger with its gold-plated finish and a hand-reamed chamber with a recessed target crown, and you've got a rimfire that punches well above its class at the range.
Pro-Target adjustable sights let you dial in windage and elevation for your preferred ammo, with an 8 inch sight radius that helps with precise shots on small targets. The straight blowback action is about as simple and proven as rimfire designs get, feeding from a 10-round magazine with a heat-treated body and a mag release sitting right where your thumb expects it, next to the trigger guard. A large manual thumb safety rounds out the controls.
Whether you're teaching a new shooter the fundamentals, thinning out squirrels, or burning through a brick of ammo on a Saturday, the Camper UFX is the kind of pistol that earns a permanent spot in the range bag. It's durable, accurate, easy to feed, and genuinely fun, which is the whole point of owning a .22.
It's one of the better choices out there for learning the fundamentals. The .22 LR chambering has almost no recoil, the Ultragrip FX grips are comfortable for a wide range of hand sizes including smaller hands, and the crisp single-action trigger makes it easier to build good habits. The adjustable Pro-Target sights also let you fine-tune your zero as your skills improve.
Not out of the box, since this model doesn't come with a rail or optics cut. If you want to run an optic, aftermarket Picatinny rail mounts for the Buck Mark are widely available and easy to install, or you can look at Buck Mark variants that ship with a rail from the factory.
The straight blowback action has a solid track record of running standard and high-velocity .22 LR without complaint. Like most rimfire semi-autos, it runs best with high-velocity loads and a clean chamber, so give it a good wipe-down before your first range trip to remove factory packing grease. After a short break-in, most owners find it feeds a wide variety of bulk and target ammo reliably.
The UFX frame uses overmolded rubberized grip panels with a straight frontstrap, no finger grooves. The URX and UDX frames add finger grooves and different backstrap contours. Many folks prefer the UFX because the smooth frontstrap fits a wider range of hand sizes and the tacky overmolded surface locks in your grip even in wet conditions.
