Magnum cartridges and ugly weather tend to show up on the same hunts, and this version of the Browning AB3 was set up with exactly that in mind. Instead of standard bluing, the barrel and action wear a Tungsten Cerakote finish that stands up to rain, snow, and truck bed abuse far better than traditional treatments. The OD Green composite stock rounds out a package that looks sharp and holds up when the forecast does not cooperate. Chambered in .300 Winchester Magnum, it feeds from a detachable box magazine holding three rounds and gives you the flat trajectory and downrange authority elk and mule deer hunters count on.
The 26 inch free-floating sporter barrel gives the .300 Win Mag room to build full velocity, and it comes threaded M13x0.75 with a radial muzzle brake included right out of the box. That brake takes real sting out of magnum recoil, and a thread protector is in the package too if you would rather run the muzzle clean. Browning also fits this model with a larger hex-shaped bolt knob, which is easier to run fast with cold hands or gloves. An Inflex recoil pad on the stock soaks up more of what the brake does not.
Underneath the upgrades, this is the same AB3 action hunters have trusted for years. The short 60 degree bolt lift cycles quickly and keeps your knuckles clear of scope turrets, the top-tang safety falls naturally under your thumb, and a bolt unlock button lets you cycle the action with the safety engaged. The receiver comes drilled and tapped, so mounting a scope is simple, and there are no iron sights to work around. The AB3 has a well-earned reputation for putting three shots close together right out of the box, thanks in part to that free-floated barrel and a trigger that is better than most in this class. Pull weight and features aside, it is simply a rifle you can hand to a first-time elk hunter or a longtime big game addict and know it will do its job.
Yes, a radial-style muzzle brake comes included and threads onto the M13x0.75 muzzle. A thread protector is also in the box if you prefer to shoot without the brake. Browning offers the Recoil Hawg Sporter brake separately if you want even more recoil reduction.
No, there are no iron sights and no scope included. The receiver comes drilled and tapped from the factory, so you just need bases and rings. Browning sells integrated base and ring combos made specifically for the AB3 that pair up nicely.
Between the included radial muzzle brake, the Inflex recoil pad, and the longer 26 inch barrel, this setup tames the .300 Win Mag noticeably better than a bare-muzzle sporter. It still lets you know it is a magnum, but most hunters find it very manageable from field positions. The brake does add muzzle blast, so ear protection at the range is a must.
The AB3 is Browning's value-focused bolt gun, built with simpler components than the X-Bolt while keeping the features that matter most. You still get the fast 60 degree bolt lift, a free-floated barrel, a detachable magazine, and a top-tang safety with a bolt unlock button. This particular version adds Tungsten Cerakote protection and a hex bolt knob that base AB3 models do not have.
