There aren't many .22 LR pistols out there that carry this much old-world character with this much practical functionality. The Mauser HSr is made in Germany by German Sport Guns, drawing its visual DNA from the classic Mauser HSc pocket pistol that competed alongside the Walther PPK back in the late 1930s. The silhouette is unmistakably vintage, but everything under the hood is thoroughly modern.
The all-metal construction is the first thing you notice when you pick it up. The frame is zinc alloy and the slide is machined aluminum, giving it a satisfying heft at just over a pound that doesn't feel toylike at all. The simple blowback action is about as reliable as it gets in rimfire, and the 3.5-inch hammer-forged barrel keeps things accurate and durable over the long haul. This pistol is chambered for .22 LR HV (high velocity), so stick with quality commercial ammo and it'll run clean.
For controls, the HSr is surprisingly well-equipped. The left side of the frame hosts a manual safety, a slide stop, a takedown lever, and a decocker, all laid out cleanly without feeling cluttered. The DA/SA trigger means you can carry it hammer-down and fire that first shot double-action, then let the decocker drop the hammer safely back between strings. Three-dot sights come standard with the medium-height rear installed, and the pistol includes both a low and high rear sight so you can dial in your zero. The barrel is also threaded at M9x0.75 for those interested in suppressor use down the road.
Overall length is 6.69 inches and the slim profile makes it comfortable in the hand and easy to manage. This particular model ships with the black polymer grip shells. At 10 rounds, the magazine capacity is right in line with what you'd expect from a pistol this size. In double-action mode, pulling the trigger both cocks and releases the hammer, which requires a longer, heavier pull but allows you to fire from a hammer-down condition. Once the first round fires, the slide cycles and leaves the hammer cocked for single-action, giving you a shorter and lighter pull for follow-up shots. A dedicated decocker on the left side of the frame lets you safely lower the hammer between strings without having to manually thumb it down.
The pistol ships with three-dot sights and three interchangeable rear sight blades: low, medium, and high. The medium-height rear blade comes pre-installed. An included hex key lets you swap between blades to adjust point of impact, which is a nice feature for a pistol at this price point.
The HSr is a solid option for anyone getting comfortable with a semi-automatic handgun. The .22 LR caliber means negligible recoil, making it easy to focus on fundamentals like sight picture and trigger control. The manual safety and decocker add layers of control that new shooters often appreciate. That said, the DA/SA trigger system has a bit of a learning curve compared to a simpler striker-fired pistol, so some range time to get used to the transition between the two pull weights is worthwhile.
