Description

The 215-grain Hybrid Target is one of Berger's most proven heavyweight .30 caliber match bullets, and it earned that reputation the hard way: on the firing line. Bryan Litz, who designed it, famously used this bullet to win F-TR competition, and it's been a staple in the hands of long-range competitors ever since. The star of the show is the hybrid ogive, which blends tangent and secant nose profiles into one shape. Near the bearing surface it behaves like a tangent ogive, which makes it easy to tune and forgiving on seating depth, then it transitions to a secant profile for a flatter trajectory and less wind drift down range.

What Sets the Berger 215gr Hybrid Target Apart

Every one of these bullets is built on Berger's J4 Precision Target Jacket, held to extremely tight concentricity tolerances so the bullet stays balanced at high RPM. That consistency is why a lot of handloaders skip weight-sorting a box of Berger. With a G1 BC of 0.691 and a G7 BC of 0.354, this bullet bleeds very little velocity and fights wind well past the mid-range, which is exactly what you want when the target is a long way off.

Loading the 215 Hybrid in Your Rifle

This is a long, heavy projectile with a 0.308 diameter, 1.598" overall length, and a 0.324 sectional density. Berger lists a minimum twist of 1:10 or faster to stabilize it properly, and most competitors running it in .308 Win, .300 Win Mag, .30 Nosler, and similar cartridges lean on that 1:10 or quicker barrel. Out of a .308 you'll typically see velocities in the 2,500 to 2,600 fps range depending on your barrel and powder, while the magnum .30s push it noticeably faster. It's a boat tail design, so it tracks cleanly and loads smoothly once you dial in your seating depth.

If your discipline is F-Class, PRS, or just ringing steel at distance, this is a bullet that rewards careful load development with tight groups and predictable dope. It's a target projectile through and through, so plan your build around match work rather than hunting.

Frequently Asked Questions

What twist rate do I need to stabilize the Berger 215gr Hybrid Target?

Berger lists a minimum twist of 1:10" or faster for this 215-grain bullet. Many competitors run it successfully in 1:10 barrels, and some go to 1:9 or faster for full stability under worst-case conditions or at higher elevations. A 1:10 twist is the safe baseline for a .308 Win or any of the .30 magnums.

What is the ballistic coefficient of the Berger 215gr Hybrid Target?

This bullet carries a G1 BC of 0.691 and a G7 BC of 0.354, with a G7 form factor of 0.915. Those numbers put it among the better long-range options in the .30 caliber class, which is a big part of why it resists wind drift so well at distance.

Can I use the Berger 215gr Hybrid Target for hunting?

No, this is a target projectile designed for match accuracy, not terminal performance on game. Berger builds these specifically for competition and long-range target work like F-Class, PRS, and steel. If you're after a hunting bullet in .30 cal, you'll want one from Berger's hunting line or another dedicated hunting projectile instead.

Why do shooters like the hybrid ogive on these bullets?

The hybrid ogive blends a tangent and secant profile into one shape. The tangent portion near the bearing surface makes the bullet easy to tune and more forgiving on seating depth, while the secant portion gives you a flatter trajectory and less wind drift. In practice that means you spend less time chasing a finicky load and more time hitting your target.
