The Berger 30 Cal 155gr VLD Hunting bullet was built for the handloader who wants match grade consistency and terminal performance in the same projectile. It carries the .308 diameter secant ogive VLD profile that made Berger famous, giving you a slick, aerodynamic nose that cuts drag, flattens trajectory, and shrugs off wind better than most conventional hunting bullets. With a G1 ballistic coefficient right around 0.464 and a recommended twist of 1:14 or faster, it's a natural fit for .308 Win, .30-06, and the various .30 cal magnums.
These share the same design as Berger's VLD Target bullets but swap in a thinner J4 Precision jacket tuned for hunting. The idea is simple: penetrate a couple inches into the vitals before the bullet goes to work, then open up fast. Berger designs these to drive 2 to 3 inches before expanding, dumping energy inside the animal and creating a sizable wound cavity rather than punching clean through. That translates to quick, clean kills and less tracking after the shot.
VLD bullets with the secant ogive can be a touch picky about seating depth, which is honestly part of what makes them so rewarding once you dial them in. A common starting point is seating close to or touching the rifling for single feed work, though plenty of rifles shoot their best with the bullet jumped as much as .150 off the lands. Spend a little time at the bench finding your rifle's sweet spot and you'll be rewarded with tight groups.
The J4 Precision jacket is the same component favored by custom bullet makers, which tells you plenty about the tolerances Berger holds. Built to match grade standards and packed 100 to a box, this bullet gives serious reloaders a dependable foundation for building long range hunting loads that perform when it counts.
This is a .308 diameter projectile, so it works in any .30 caliber cartridge like .308 Winchester, .30-06 Springfield, .300 Win Mag, and other .30 cals. Berger recommends a 1:14 twist or faster to stabilize it properly. Check your rifle's twist rate before loading to make sure it will shoot these well.
The design is nearly identical, but the VLD Hunting version uses a thinner J4 Precision hunting jacket built for rapid expansion on game. Target VLDs are built for paper and steel, while this one is tuned to open up fast inside an animal. If you're hunting, this is the bullet you want.
The secant ogive profile that gives VLD bullets their low drag also makes them more sensitive to how far the bullet sits from the rifling. Many rifles like them seated close to or touching the lands, while others prefer a jump of up to .150 off the rifling. It's worth doing a seating depth test to find the node your rifle shoots best.
Each box contains 100 Berger 30 Cal 155gr VLD Hunting bullets. These are component bullets for reloading, so you'll supply your own brass, powder, and primers.
