The 686 action has been breaking targets reliably for decades, and this latest version of the Silver Pigeon I Sporting takes a platform that already worked and polishes it in all the right places. The top lever was redesigned with a repositioned release pin, so opening and closing the gun feels noticeably smoother and takes less effort. Add in the improved receiver balance and a polished stainless steel trigger, and this generation handles like a gun that costs quite a bit more.
The 30" Steelium Optimabore HP barrels are where this gun really separates itself. Beretta starts with their proprietary tri-alloy steel, deep drills it, cold hammer forges it, and finishes with vacuum distension. The result is a barrel set with lengthened double forcing cones reaching up to 80mm, which translates to softer felt recoil, less muzzle rise, and consistent patterns with lead, steel, or high-performance steel loads. Five Optima Choke HP tubes come in the box, so you can set up for anything from close incomers to long crossers. A white front bead and steel mid bead keep your eye tracking down the vent rib.
The floral engraving on this generation is richer and more detailed than before, cut with a 5-axis laser that keeps the pattern continuous across the rounded surfaces of the receiver. For the first time it extends onto the receiver tail and hinge pins, so the metalwork flows together instead of stopping short. Yes. The Optimabore HP barrel profile was designed and tested for lead, steel, and high-performance steel loads, and the included Optima Choke HP tubes are rated for steel as well. As with any shotgun, stick with more open chokes when running steel through it.
This model ships with five Optima Choke HP flush-fit tubes: Full, Improved Modified, Modified, Improved Cylinder, and Cylinder. That spread covers just about every station on a sporting clays course, plus skeet, trap practice, and upland work.
