Description

The .338 Norma Magnum has quietly become one of the most respected long-range cartridges out there, and it is the same chambering fielded in the Mk22 version of this platform. The MRAD earned its keep in the SOCOM Advanced Sniper Rifle trials, and the SMR, short for Single Mission Rifle, is Barrett's take for the buyer who already knows exactly what they want. One caliber, set up at the factory, sharing roughly 90 percent of its parts with the standard MRAD and carrying the same .75 MOA accuracy standard.

What Makes the MRAD SMR Different

Instead of the swappable barrel system, the SMR runs a free-floated 26 inch fluted barrel secured in the upper with a standard barrel nut. The folding stock is gone too, replaced by a fixed stock with a tool-free adjustable cheek piece and spacers for length of pull. Those two changes trim close to two and a half pounds and about an inch of length off the standard MRAD, bringing this rifle in at 12.3 pounds bare. The monolithic upper is machined from 7000-series aluminum with a full-length tapered Picatinny top rail, and the handguard gives you M-LOK real estate for a bipod, night vision bridge, or whatever else your setup calls for.

Set Up for Serious Distance

The 1:9.4 twist stabilizes the heavy .300 grain class bullets that make .338 Norma shine past a mile, and the suppressor-capable muzzle brake takes real bite out of recoil. Barrett's fully adjustable two-stage match trigger sits in a drop-in module you can pull without tools, and the short-throw safety and Magpul MOE grip feel familiar to anyone who has spent time behind a modern rifle. Feeding comes from a 10-round polymer double-stack magazine that loads about as easily as an AR mag, which is a nice touch with a cartridge this size.

A Purpose-Built Barrett in FDE

Finished in Flat Dark Earth Cerakote, this is the MRAD stripped down to what matters most: a proven action, a match barrel, and repeatable accuracy at distances most rifles never see.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the MRAD SMR use Barrett barrel conversion kits?

No. The SMR is set up at the factory for one caliber, and its free-floated barrel is retained with a standard barrel nut rather than the quick-change Torx screw system. If swapping calibers is a priority, the standard MRAD is the one to look at. The SMR trades that flexibility for a lighter, slimmer rifle.

How does the MRAD SMR differ from the standard MRAD?

The SMR drops the folding stock and user-changeable barrel system in favor of a fixed stock and a barrel-nut retained free-float barrel. That cuts close to 2.5 pounds and about an inch of overall length while keeping roughly 90 percent parts commonality, the same adjustable match trigger, and the same .75 MOA accuracy standard.

Is this rifle suppressor ready?

Yes. The MRAD SMR ships with Barrett's suppressor-capable muzzle brake, so a compatible can mounts right up without swapping hardware. The brake also does a solid job taming .338 Norma recoil when you are running it unsuppressed.

Why choose .338 Norma Mag over .338 Lapua?

The .338 Norma runs the same .338 caliber bullets in a slightly shorter case, and it feeds well from double-stack magazines. It is the chambering used in the military Mk22 version of this platform, so match-grade factory ammo support is strong. Ballistically the two are close, with the Norma holding excellent supersonic reach well past a mile.
