The Arex Zero 1S is a full-size, hammer-fired 9mm pistol made by Arex in Slovenia and distributed in the US by Global Ordnance. It draws obvious aesthetic inspiration from the SIG P226 family, but it is not a clone. Arex engineered it from the ground up with its own CNC machining processes, and the result is a gun with tight slide-to-frame fit, a cold hammer-forged nitrocarburized barrel, and a hard-anodized 7075-T6 aluminum frame with a hardened steel locking block insert. Build quality on these is genuinely impressive for the price point.
The action is DA/SA with an external hammer, ambidextrous manual safety, and a combined slide stop and decocker on the left side of the frame. That last feature lets the gun run two ways: traditional DA/SA carry with the hammer down, or cocked-and-locked like a 1911. The ambidextrous thumb safety works in both configurations, and the ambi mag release means lefties don't have to compromise either. Front and rear cocking serrations, front and rear frame strap serrations, and a large squared-off trigger guard designed to accommodate gloved hands round out the ergonomics package.
The 4.25-inch barrel is a single-piece cold hammer-forged unit milled from solid bar stock and then nitrocarburized for added hardness and corrosion resistance. The slide is the same story: milled chrome-moly steel, nitrocarburized finish. Full-length slide rails in the frame keep the slide-to-frame fit extremely tight, which contributes to the gun's mechanical accuracy. There is also a blade-style loaded chamber indicator on top of the slide that is easy to feel without looking. A MIL-STD 1913 Picatinny rail runs along the dust cover for lights or lasers.
The Zero 1S ships with two 17-round magazines that use a progressive-rate spring for reliable feeding all the way to the last round. The pistol is rated for SAAMI-spec +P ammunition and has passed mil-spec testing for extreme temperatures, drop resistance, and adverse environments. Arex backs the civilian version with a manufacturer's limited lifetime warranty. This pistol fits well for home defense, duty use, or range work for anyone who prefers the feel and manual of arms of a traditional metal-frame service pistol.
Yes, and that is one of the things that sets this pistol apart from most other DA/SA designs. The ambidextrous thumb safety works whether the hammer is cocked or down, so you can carry it cocked-and-locked for a crisp single-action first shot, or safely decocked for a traditional DA/SA pull. The slide-stop lever doubles as the decocker, which keeps the controls intuitive once you learn the system.
The Zero 1S takes a lot of its design language from the P226 family, including the overall profile and fire control layout, but it is a completely different gun underneath. The frame, slide, and barrel are unique to Arex and parts do not interchange with SIG. The Zero 1S also adds features the standard P226 does not have, including an ambidextrous thumb safety and the ability to carry cocked-and-locked, making it a distinct design in its own right.
The double-action pull is heavy, typically measured around 12 to 13 pounds depending on the specific sample, which provides a safe deliberate first shot from a hammer-down carry position. The single-action pull breaks cleanly at around 5 to 5.5 pounds with a short, audible reset. If you are coming from a striker-fired gun, give yourself some range time to get comfortable with the DA pull before relying on it.
It has an excellent reliability record across a wide range of 9mm loads, from 115-grain FMJ plinking ammo all the way up to 147-grain hollow points and +P defensive loads. Multiple reviewers and testers ran hundreds of rounds through these pistols straight out of the box without any failures. Arex rates the pistol to meet military reliability standards, including testing in extreme temperatures and adverse environments.
The standard Zero 1S does not come optics-ready from the factory. The slide features dovetail-mounted 3-dot sights and is not milled for a red dot out of the box. Adding a red dot would generally require aftermarket gunsmith work or a slide milling service. If optics readiness is a priority, Arex's Tactical and TC variants are the models to look at.
The Zero 1S ships with two factory Arex 17-round double-stack magazines, and Arex manufactures these in-house. They use a progressive-rate spring design that maintains consistent tension even when fully loaded, making that last round easy to seat. Spare magazines are available through FIME Group and various online retailers, and they are reasonably priced compared to spare mags for comparable European service pistols.
