Green tritium is the brightest and most easily seen color to the human eye, which is a big reason it shows up on so many duty and carry guns. Tritium has a half-life of around 12 years, so the dots gradually get dimmer over time rather than switching off all at once. Most folks get a solid decade or more of useful brightness before considering a replacement. It's a slow fade, so you'll have plenty of notice.
The front sight typically goes in with a nut driver, which is manageable at home. The rear sight is a dovetail fit and usually calls for a sight pusher or a quick visit to a gunsmith to seat it square and set your windage. If you're not comfortable with the rear, it's an easy and inexpensive job for any local shop.
