There is something about a 28 gauge over under that just feels right in the hands, and the ATI Cavalry SX nails that feeling without the price tag usually attached to it. Built by KOFS in Turkey and imported by American Tactical, this little double weighs in right around 6 pounds thanks to its 7075 aluminum receiver, so you can carry it through a full day of quail or dove hunting and barely notice it hanging on your shoulder. The receiver wears an intricate laser-engraved design that gives it the look of a gun costing quite a bit more.
The 26 inch barrels are 4140 chrome moly steel with a matte blued finish, a vent rib, and a brass bead up front for a fast, clean sight picture on flushing birds. A single selective trigger lets you pick which barrel fires first, and the top tang safety sits right where your thumb expects it. Extractors lift your spent hulls for easy removal, which plenty of upland hunters prefer since your empties stay in your hand instead of flying into the brush. Chambers accept up to 3 inch shells, giving you flexibility across the 28 gauge loads on the shelf.
ATI includes five interchangeable Mobil-pattern choke tubes covering everything from skeet distances out to full choke work, so one gun handles clays in the morning and birds in the afternoon. The oil-finished Turkish walnut stock and forend are hand fit at the factory, with a 14.23 inch length of pull, 1.45 inch drop at comb, and 2.2 inch drop at heel that suit a wide range of builds.
The 28 gauge has earned a loyal following for its light recoil and surprisingly effective patterns, and this is one of the most affordable ways to get into a break action chambered for it. Whether it becomes your dedicated upland gun, a starter double for a new wingshooter, or the gun that finally sells you on the sweetness of the 28, the Cavalry SX earns its spot in the safe.
It comes in right around 6.1 pounds thanks to the 7075 aluminum receiver. That is genuinely light for an over under, which makes it a joy to carry on long upland walks and quick to the shoulder on fast flushes. New or smaller-framed wingshooters tend to appreciate the easy handling too.
This SV model uses extractors, which lift the spent shells out of the chambers so you can pull them by hand. Many upland hunters prefer extractors because empties stay with you instead of ejecting into the field. If you want auto ejectors, ATI offers an SVE version of the Cavalry line.
Five interchangeable Mobil-pattern choke tubes are included, running from open patterns for skeet and close-flushing birds up to full for longer shots. That range covers clays, doves, quail, and just about anything else you would ask a 28 gauge to do. Being a common thread pattern, replacement and specialty tubes are easy to find.
The Cavalry line is manufactured by KOFS in Turkey and imported by American Tactical. Turkish makers have built a solid reputation for delivering well-fitted break action shotguns at approachable prices, and each Cavalry is hand fit at the factory. ATI backs it with a limited lifetime warranty.
