Description

Sinclair's Heavy Varmint series grew out of their old Generation II rest and their Competition rest, the one that plenty of top benchrest shooters swear by. This All-Purpose RH Windage version keeps all the good hardware and adds a windage top, so you can make fine horizontal corrections by turning a knob instead of shoving the whole rest around. It's a heavy, deliberate piece of gear meant for the guy who cares about shrinking groups, whether that's chasing accuracy nodes at the loading bench or wringing every bit of precision out of a varmint rifle.

The build is where this thing earns its keep. It rides on a ductile cast iron base with a powder coat finish, backed by a heavy-duty stainless steel center column and a 1-inch stainless post. Vertical adjustments come off an oversized scalloped hand wheel running on a thrust bearing, so raising and lowering your crosshairs feels smooth instead of gritty. The rest feet use large 1/2-20 threads with oversized aluminum anodized knobs, and there's not a plastic part in sight. Loaded up with a filled bag it tips the scales around 17 pounds, which is exactly why it doesn't skate around under recoil.

What the All-Purpose Top Brings to the Bench

The A/P top is the versatile one in the lineup. It quick-adjusts with a turn of a lever to handle forends ranging from narrow sporter stocks all the way out to 3-1/2 inch BR stocks, and a fully adjustable forend stop lets you drop the rifle into the same spot shot after shot. That repeatability is what separates a good group from a lucky one.

Getting Your Windage Dialed on the Sinclair Heavy Varmint Rest

Since this is the right-hand windage model, the adjustment knob sits on the side that a right-handed shooter can reach naturally. Nudge it to walk your point of aim across the target without disturbing the rifle's setup, which is a real advantage when you're shooting for score or working through a load ladder. It ships with a dual-sided leather and Cordura sandbag, though you'll want to fill it before your first session at the bench. Made in the USA.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Heavy Varmint rest come with a sandbag, and is it filled?

Yes, the All-Purpose model includes a dual-sided leather and Cordura front bag. It ships empty, so you'll need to fill it with sand or your media of choice before heading to the bench. Give it a firm, even fill for the most consistent support under the forend.

What size forends will the All-Purpose top handle?

The A/P top is the versatile one in the Heavy Varmint lineup. With a turn of the lever it quick-adjusts to fit forends from narrow sporter stocks all the way up to 3-1/2 inch benchrest stocks. That range covers most varmint and precision rifles you'd bring to the line.

What does the right-hand windage option actually do?

The windage top adds a knob on the side of the rest that lets you make fine horizontal corrections without moving the whole rest or repositioning the rifle. On the RH model the knob sits where a right-handed shooter can reach it comfortably. It's a big help when you're shooting for score or working up loads and want to walk your aim across the target.

How heavy is this rest and will it stay put?

With a filled bag it runs around 17 pounds, thanks to the ductile cast iron base and stainless hardware. That mass is by design, since a heavy rest plants itself on the bench and resists shifting under recoil. It's not something you'll toss in a range bag, but it earns that weight in stability.
