Description

The L.E. Wilson 6.8 Western Micrometer Top Bullet Seater is one of those tools that separates good handloads from great ones. Built from stainless steel and designed around Wilson's chamber-type (inline) layout, it captures both the case and the bullet before seating begins. The bullet is then pushed straight down into the case mouth by a close-fitting seating stem, which is how these dies earn their reputation for low runout and excellent concentricity. If you load the 6.8 Western for long range or just want rounds that measure consistent every single time, this is the die reloaders keep coming back to.

How the 6.8 Western Micrometer Seater Works

This is a hand die meant to run on an arbor press rather than a conventional threaded press. You drop a primed, charged case and bullet into the die body, set it on the base, and press the cap down until it bottoms out. Because the case sits stationary while the bullet comes straight down, there's very little opportunity for the bullet to tip off center. Wilson recommends pairing it with a quality arbor press, and plenty of folks run it with a K&M or similar setup. You can even seat with a soft mallet in a pinch, though a press is the way to go.

Micrometer Control Down to .001

The micrometer top is where this die really shines. The engraved scale lets you adjust seating depth in .001 inch increments, and the settings are repeatable, so once you find the sweet spot for your rifle you can return to it batch after batch. Larger adjustments are handled through the 3/8 inch to 24 TPI threads in the cap. One underrated perk: since the whole setup is compact, you can bring the die and press to the range to test seating depth on the spot and dial in your optimal cartridge length without endless trips back to the bench.

It's made in the USA and marked with laser engraving for the 6.8 Western chambering specifically, so there's no guesswork about what you've got on the bench.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the 6.8 Western Micrometer Top Bullet Seater work on a standard reloading press?

No, this is a hand die built for use with an arbor press, not a conventional 7/8 inch to 14 threaded press. You set the die on its base and press the cap down with the arbor press to seat the bullet. You can also seat with a soft-faced mallet, but an arbor press gives you the best feel and consistency.

How precise is the micrometer adjustment on this Wilson seater?

The engraved micrometer scale adjusts seating depth in .001 inch increments, and the settings are repeatable from batch to batch. Larger adjustments are handled through the 3/8 inch to 24 TPI threads in the cap. Once you find the depth your rifle likes, you can return to that exact setting whenever you reload.

Why does a chamber-type seater like this produce more concentric ammo?

The chamber-type design captures both the case and the bullet inside the die body before seating starts, holding them in alignment while a close-fitting stem pushes the bullet straight into the case mouth. Because the case stays stationary and everything is captured, there's very little chance for the bullet to tip. That translates to lower runout, which many precision handloaders value for long-range accuracy.

Can I take this die to the range to test seating depth?

Yes, and that's one of its best features. The die and a compact arbor press are easy to bring along, so you can adjust seating depth on the spot and find your rifle's optimal cartridge length. That saves the back-and-forth trips between the range and your bench.
