The Williams 290N front sight uses a red fiber optic rod that gathers whatever ambient light is around and focuses it into a bright, glowing dot. The more light it catches, the brighter it burns, and it holds up well even in harsh midday sun instead of washing out. Williams was one of the first names in the fiber optic sight game back in the early 90s, and this Fire Sight line is where they built that reputation.
This one is machined from steel rather than aluminum, so it's a tough, durable bead that stands up to real field use. The number 290 tells you the height, measured .290" from the bottom of the dovetail to the top of the sight, while the N designation means it wears a narrow .250" base. That narrow base is cut specifically for Williams streamlined and shorty ramps, so pairing it with the right ramp matters. The red fiber rod sits right up top where your eye lands, giving you a fast, contrasting aiming reference that's easy to pick up in a hurry.
These steel dovetail beads are designed to drop into a nominal 3/8" dovetail, though it's worth knowing that front sights in ramps and barrels almost always call for some minor fitting to get a snug, centered fit. A brass or nylon punch and a little patience usually get the job done. Getting the height right is the key to your point of impact, so if your rifle is shooting a touch high or low, matching the correct front sight height is the honest path to dialing it in.

No batteries here. The fiber optic rod simply gathers whatever ambient light is around and channels it into a bright red dot, so it glows brighter as available light increases. It works best at dawn, dusk, under tree cover, or on overcast days, and it won't glow in total darkness the way a tritium night sight would.
Steel is the tougher choice for a front sight that lives out in the field and takes knocks. This 290N is machined from steel, so it holds up well to hard use over time. You still get the same bright red fiber optic rod for fast target acquisition.
