Factory extractors, especially those made from Metal Injection Molding (MIM), tend to lose tension over time and can chip or break when case rims catch them at the wrong angle. This extractor starts with solid tool steel instead, gets vacuum heat-treated for hardness, and incorporates design improvements throughout.
What makes this extractor hold up is attention to geometry. The claw is wider than stock and positioned closer to the breech face so it grips the case rim more consistently. Every corner is radiused rather than cut at sharp 90-degree angles, which eliminates the stress risers where extractors typically fail. The body is about three times thicker than factory parts, and the hook design itself was reworked to keep the extractor from riding up the case groove during firing. That constant contact is what dulls factory hooks over time and eventually costs you reliable extraction.
This isn't a true drop-in part, though it's not complicated either. Professional installation with proper fitting is recommended, though experienced builders can handle it themselves. The extractor needs to be tensioned correctly and may require minor fitting to the slide and firing pin stop for seamless operation. The rear face is left slightly long so a gunsmith can custom blend it if you want a seamless look.
This is a Series 70 design, which means it works with 1911 pistols that don't have a firing pin block safety. All Springfield Armory 1911s are Series 70. If you have a Kimber, verify which series your gun is, since some models accept either type. This won't work with Schwartz-style firing pin safeties.
This extractor is designed for Series 70 1911 pistols chambered in .38 Super or 9mm. If your gun is a Series 80 (with firing pin block safety) or uses a Schwartz-style safety, this extractor won't work. Government, Commander, and Officer's model 1911s in .38 Super or 9mm will accept it, but proper fitting is required.
