The 10.5" HK416 Super Modular Rail (SMR) from Geissele is the free-float handguard a lot of HK416 and MR556 owners end up chasing once they get tired of the factory rail. It ditches the bulk and the sharp Picatinny edges of the stock setup and replaces them with a slim, rounded profile that fills the hand better and gives you room to run modern accessories the way you want them. It threads onto the stock HK barrel nut, so you keep the guts of your rifle and simply upgrade what you're holding onto.
Geissele machines this rail from 6061-T6 aluminum and finishes it in Type 3 hardcoat anodize, so it holds up to hard use and shrugs off the elements. The design leaned on feedback from military end users, and that shows in the details: full M-LOK slotting at the 3, 6, and 9 o'clock positions runs the length of the rail, there's a continuous Picatinny rail along the top for optics and irons, and short Picatinny sections up front give you spots for a light or laser without loading up the whole thing. Rail sections lock in with steel inserts for a solid steel-to-steel connection that won't shift on you.
This one is optimized for a 10.5" barrel and comes in at right around 10 to 13 ounces depending on how it's spec'd, with an actual rail length of about 9 3/8 inches. The inner diameter runs 1.35" and the DAQ measures 2.08", giving it that trim, snag-free feel that makes short-barrel builds handle so well. The Desert Dirt Color finish is Geissele's take on the varied shades of desert terrain, so expect a warm sand tone that pairs nicely with FDE furniture.
Installation is straightforward but does call for a little care. On an HK416, the sling loops on the outside of the gas block need to be removed since clearance between the barrel nut and the handguard is machined tight. A light film of oil on the barrel nut helps the rail slide home, and the mounting bolt torques to roughly 10 ft-lbs. If you're not comfortable with the process, a qualified gunsmith or armorer can knock it out quickly.
Yes. This SMR was designed to replace the standard rail on both the HK416 and MR556 platforms. It uses the stock HK barrel nut, so you don't need to swap that out. Just keep in mind the tight machined clearances during install.
On an HK416, the sling loops on the outside of the gas block need to be removed since the handguard clearance is machined tight. This is a permanent modification and best handled by a certified gunsmith or armorer. MR556 uppers typically don't require this step.
