Neck tension is one of those little details that separates ammo that just goes bang from ammo that prints tight groups, and this 0.203" steel bushing gives you direct control over it. It fits RCBS Gold Medal Match series sizing dies and sizes only the case neck to the exact diameter you choose, so you set how much grip the neck puts on the bullet instead of leaving it up to a fixed expander ball. The bushing is self-centering, which keeps it aligned with the case neck as the brass goes up into the die for straighter, more concentric results.
By sizing just the neck and no more than necessary, a properly fitted bushing reduces work hardening of the neck brass. That means longer case life and more repeatable tension round to round, which shows up on target as less vertical stringing. You get the best results pairing it with quality brass that has consistent neck wall thickness, and plenty of precision reloaders turn their necks to tighten that consistency up even further.
There are two easy ways to land on your number. Measure the outside neck diameter of a loaded cartridge and subtract .002" to .003", which leaves roughly .001" of brass springback for correct tension. Or measure the neck wall thickness, double it, add your bullet diameter, then subtract .001". RCBS suggests keeping a couple bushings on hand above and below your target size so you can tune tension to your rifle and shooting style.
