Plenty of folks buy a complete ZPAPM70 and immediately strip off the factory furniture to swap in their own stock, grip, and handguard. This barreled action skips that step entirely. Zastava ships it without furniture or a magazine, so you start with a clean slate: pick your wood set, your polymer, your Magpul or rail setup, and finish the rifle the way you pictured it. Underneath, it is the same Serbian-built M70 that has earned a serious reputation among AK fans.
The core here is the good stuff. You get a 16.25 inch cold hammer forged, chrome lined barrel that shrugs off steel case ammo and heavy range days, mounted in a bulged front trunnion sitting inside a thick 1.5mm stamped receiver. That RPK-style construction is heavier duty than standard 1mm AK receivers and is a big part of why Zastava rifles have a reputation for taking abuse. The fire control group and bolt carrier group are heat treated and properly matched, so the internals are as serious as the exterior.
Zastava included some thoughtful touches too. The safety selector has a bolt hold open notch, a small feature you will appreciate every time you clear the rifle or show it safe at the range. Adjustable iron sights come installed, and the M70-style side rail means you can hang a red dot or scope mount without any gunsmithing. Up front, the muzzle is threaded 14×1 LH under a classic slant brake, so swapping to a different muzzle device takes about a minute.
Once you add a stock set, pistol grip, handguard, and a magazine, you have a complete semi-auto 7.62×39 rifle. That makes this a smart route for anyone who already has furniture waiting in the parts bin, or who simply refuses to pay for factory handguards they were going to replace anyway. Solid Zastava bones, your parts, your rifle.
This is the hard part of an AK build already done right: headspaced, riveted, and finished at the factory. All that is left is the fun part.
No, and that is the whole point of this configuration. It ships without furniture or a magazine so you can install the stock set, pistol grip, handguard, and mags you prefer. Once those parts are on, you have a complete semi-automatic 7.62×39 rifle.
Keep in mind this is a Yugo pattern AK, not an AKM. The M70 uses a longer handguard and a slightly different rear trunnion cut, so you will want furniture made for Yugo M70 rifles or ZPAPM70-specific sets. Plenty of wood and polymer options are made for this platform, including adapters that open up AKM stock options.
Yes. It comes with the M70-style side rail on the receiver, so any compatible AK side mount will let you run a red dot or scope. The adjustable iron sights are already installed for shooting right out of the box once your build is finished.
The barrel is threaded 14×1 LH, the common AK pattern, and wears a classic slant brake from the factory. Swapping to a different brake, comp, or flash hider is quick and easy. It also retains the bayonet lug, so the military look and function are intact.
