The FN 509 Tactical has roots that go back to FN's submission for the U.S. Army's Modular Handgun Trials, and that military DNA shows in how the gun is built and what it can do. FN took the already solid 509 platform and layered on every feature a serious shooter would actually want: a threaded barrel, suppressor-height night sights, an optics-ready slide, and ambi controls. This is the version of the 509 that's ready for whatever you bolt onto it.
The 4.5-inch cold hammer-forged stainless steel barrel is threaded 1/2×28, which covers the vast majority of 9mm suppressors on the market. It also has a recessed target crown and comes with an O-ring sealed thread protector that stays put during fire. The Low-Profile Optics Mounting System is the real standout here. It lets you mount more than ten different mini red dot optics without any slide milling, and the sights co-witness with whatever optic you run. When you're not running glass, the included slide cap features raised wings that protect the irons and double as a handy surface for one-handed slide manipulation.
The Trijicon 3-dot tritium night sights are suppressor height, meaning they stay usable whether you have a can mounted or not. The grip frame is fully textured polymer with two interchangeable backstraps so you can dial in the fit, and the MIL-STD-1913 rail on the dust cover is ready for a weapon light or laser. Both the slide stop and mag release are fully ambidextrous, which is a genuinely rare feature at any price point.
