The 1911 has been around for over a century, and at this point you either love the platform or you don't. The AF1911-Romulus is for those who love it but want more out of it. Alpha Foxtrot took the classic single-stack recipe and rebuilt it as a double-stack 9mm with a modern feature set that competes in the same conversation as pistols costing considerably more.
The ported bull barrel is the centerpiece of what makes this gun shoot the way it does. Porting vents propellant gas upward to push the muzzle down on firing, which means less muzzle flip and faster split times between shots. Pair that with a bull barrel design (no barrel bushing, which means tighter lockup and more consistent accuracy) and you have a setup that rewards people who spend serious time at the range. The barrel itself is machined from SUS416 stainless steel with a 1:10 right-hand twist and button-rifled bore for match-grade consistency. The ported slide cuts also reduce mass up front, helping the whole system cycle crisply.
The slide is cut for MOS-style optics mounting and ships with adapter plates for both Trijicon RMR and Holosun footprints, so you can drop your favorite red dot on without hunting for aftermarket parts. Night Fision front sights are already installed, which means iron-sight backup is covered right out of the box. The skeletonized trigger runs from the factory at around 3.5 lbs, which is light and clean without being scary-light for real-world use. Front and rear slide serrations give you positive purchase on manipulations whether your hands are dry or not.
The ergonomics side of things is well thought out too. The polymer grip module has an aggressive texture, and the assembled flared magwell makes reloads fast and forgiving. An extended beavertail keeps your hand high on the grip without risking hammer bite, and the extended slide release means you're not fighting the gun to drop the slide. The integrated Picatinny rail handles weapon lights and lasers without needing any adapters. It ships with both a 17-round and a 20-round double-stack magazine, so you're range-ready from the start.
This version of the Romulus uses a rear MOS adapter cut that accepts both Trijicon RMR and Holosun RMSc footprints via the included adapter plates. The RMSC plate comes pre-installed, and the RMR plate is included in the box. That covers the two most popular red dot footprints in the market right now, so most buyers will be set without buying anything extra.
The Romulus ships with both a 17-round and a 20-round double-stack magazine, and the listed capacity is 20+1. It uses 1911/2011-style double-stack magazines, and the platform is compatible with common magazines in that format. The flared magwell on the grip module makes fast reloads noticeably easier, especially with the higher-capacity 20-round mag.
The porting cuts in the barrel vent propellant gases upward as the bullet exits, which pushes the muzzle down and reduces the amount of muzzle flip you experience between shots. The bull barrel design eliminates the barrel bushing found on traditional 1911s, which tightens up the barrel-to-slide lockup for more consistent accuracy. Together, these two features make a real difference in how flat and fast the gun shoots.
It sits squarely in the 2011-style category. Alpha Foxtrot built it on a double-stack frame with a polymer grip module to handle the higher capacity magazines, which is the defining characteristic of the 2011 format. The trigger feel, hammer-fired operation, and overall ergonomics are very much in the 1911 tradition, but the increased capacity and modern features put it in modern double-stack territory.
The Romulus comes with a Night Fision front sight installed, which provides a glowing aiming point in low-light conditions without needing batteries. The rear of the slide is cut for MOS-style optic mounting, so most buyers running a red dot will use the rear optic cut as their rear reference point. The setup works well whether you're running a dot, irons only, or a dot with the front sight as a co-witness reference.
Dedicated AF1911-Romulus holsters are available from Alpha Foxtrot directly, and several aftermarket holster makers are producing options as the platform gains popularity. Some owners have also found that holsters designed for the Staccato P or similar 2011-pattern pistols can work with minor fitting adjustments, depending on the specific light and rail configuration.
