Waterfowl guns get treated worse than just about any firearm out there, and the Browning Maxus II Wicked Wing is built with that reality in mind. The receiver and 26 inch barrel wear a Burnt Bronze Cerakote finish that shrugs off moisture far better than traditional bluing, and the bolt, shell carrier, and other internals get a nickel PTFE coating for extra corrosion protection and smoother cycling. The composite stock is dipped in Mossy Oak Bottomland camo with rubber overmolded panels on the grip and forearm, so the gun stays put in your hands even when everything is soaked.
The heart of this gun is Browning's Power Drive gas system, which uses a longer stroke and enlarged gas ports to cycle everything from light 2-3/4 inch field loads up to punishing 3-1/2 inch magnums. That gas operation bleeds off a lot of felt recoil on its own, and the thick Inflex recoil pad and SoftFlex cheek pad take care of the rest. Plenty of folks who spend long days in the blind point to the recoil, or lack of it, as the first thing they notice about this gun. The Lightning Trigger breaks clean with a fast lock time, and the Speed Load Plus system sends the first shell you drop in the magazine straight to the chamber.
The extended bolt handle and oversized bolt release are easy to run with gloves on, and there's a magazine cutoff on the left side of the receiver for swapping loads on the fly. Up top, a full length vent rib carries an ivory mid bead and fiber optic front sight for quick, natural pointing on crossing birds. The back-bored barrel has a chrome plated chamber and bore, and it comes threaded for Invector-Plus chokes with three extended Goose Band tubes included: Full, Modified, and Improved Cylinder. Toss in the shim adjustable stock, the TurnKey magazine plug, and the included ABS hard case, and you've got a complete waterfowl rig ready for opening day.
The Power Drive gas system was designed with a longer stroke and larger gas ports specifically to run a wide spread of ammunition. It handles everything from light 2-3/4 inch loads up to 3-1/2 inch magnums, so you can shoot clays with the same gun you hunt with. Like most gas guns, quality factory ammo gives the most consistent cycling.
This is one of the softest shooting 12 gauges in its class. The gas operation absorbs a big chunk of the recoil impulse, and the thick Inflex recoil pad plus the SoftFlex cheek pad soak up the rest. Even 3-1/2 inch goose loads are a lot more manageable than you'd expect, which matters on high volume days.
Yes, the stock is shim adjustable so you can tune length of pull, cast, and drop to match your build and shooting style. The stock also has a straight heel section, so a gunsmith can shorten the length of pull up to 3/4 inch and refit the recoil pad if you need a more compact fit.
The barrel is threaded for Browning's Invector-Plus choke system, and this model ships with three extended Goose Band tubes in Full, Modified, and Improved Cylinder. Combined with the back-bored barrel and chrome plated bore, they throw dense, even patterns for decoying and passing birds alike. Aftermarket Invector-Plus chokes are widely available if you want a specialty waterfowl tube.
