Colt has been building AR pattern rifles longer than anyone, and the M5 Carbine Sentry is what happens when they take everything learned over those decades and start fresh. The M5 platform has been serving with military and law enforcement units overseas since 2017, and the Sentry is the semi-auto version built for the US market. Both receivers are completely redesigned, machined from 7075-T6 aluminum with a hardcoat anodized finish, and the controls are fully ambidextrous throughout. Safety, bolt catch, and magazine release all work from either side, so left-handed folks finally get a Colt that treats them like a first-class customer.
The upper receiver and 15 inch M-LOK handguard mate together with a dovetail interface secured by two bolts, so the whole assembly behaves more like one solid piece than a rail bolted onto a receiver. That rigidity matters when you mount an optic and expect it to hold zero through rough handling. Under the rail sits a 16.1 inch chrome-lined 4150 CMV barrel with a 1:7 twist that stabilizes everything from light varmint loads to heavy 77 grain match ammo, fed by a proven carbine-length gas system that keeps the rifle running smooth without any exotic tuning. Flip-up front and rear sights come installed, so it is usable right out of the box while you decide on glass.
At 6.8 pounds unloaded with a collapsible stock and A2 grip, the Sentry carries and swings like a rifle should. It ships with a single 30-round Magpul PMAG, and the slim rail leaves plenty of real estate for a light, sling mount, or hand stop wherever you want them. Yes, and that is one of the biggest selling points of this rifle. The safety selector, bolt catch, and magazine release are all fully functional from both sides of the receiver from the factory. Left-handed users get the same speed and control as righties without adding a single aftermarket part.
The M5 is a clean-sheet design rather than an update to the classic M4 pattern. It uses redesigned upper and lower receivers with full ambi controls, plus a 15 inch free-float M-LOK rail that mates to the upper with a rigid two-bolt dovetail interface. The 6920 series sticks with the traditional drop-in handguard and standard controls, so the M5 is the more modern, more modular platform.
The 1:7 twist is the same rate the military uses, and it handles the full range of 5.56 bullet weights well. It really shines with heavier 62 to 77 grain loads, but standard 55 grain range ammo shoots just fine too. The chrome-lined 4150 CMV barrel also holds up to high round counts, so you can feed it steady diets of bulk ammo without worry.
It ships with flip-up front and rear sights installed, so you can shoot it the day you bring it home. The full-length flat top Picatinny rail gives you plenty of room for a red dot or LPVO, and the folding sights tuck down out of the way or co-witness depending on your setup. The rigid upper and rail assembly does a great job holding zero once your optic is mounted.
