There's a reason the ZPAPM70 keeps coming up whenever someone asks which AK to buy first. Zastava has been building rifles in Kragujevac, Serbia since the 1850s, and the M70 pattern this rifle is based on served as a military arm for decades. This is not a parts-kit build or a budget import. It comes out of the same factory that made the originals, and it shows in the fit, the finish, and the way it runs.
The receiver is stamped from 1.5mm steel, noticeably thicker than the 1mm stock found on most AK pattern rifles, and it's paired with the bulged front trunnion that Yugoslav-pattern rifles are known for. That combination keeps the receiver rigid and gives the rifle the kind of durability that handles hard use without complaint. The 16.3 inch barrel is cold hammer forged and chrome lined, so it holds up to corrosive surplus ammo, long range days, and years of neglect you probably shouldn't subject it to but could. The bolt carrier is corrosion-resistant nickel-moly steel, the muzzle is threaded 14×1 LH under the included slant brake, and there's a handy bolt hold-open notch cut into the safety selector.
Most AKs wear dark wood or black polymer. This one shows up in blonde maple with natural grain that contrasts sharply against the blued steel, and plenty of them come with tiger-stripe figuring in the wood. It's a classic rifle that looks like something special without giving up anything functional. Adjustable front and rear iron sights come standard, and the traditional side rail on the left of the receiver is ready for an AK optic mount when you want to add glass.

Yes, it's genuine hardwood maple with an oiled finish, not a laminate or synthetic look-alike. Grain and figuring vary from rifle to rifle since it's natural wood, and some come with striking tiger-stripe patterns. The blonde color against the blued steel gives it a look most AKs simply don't have.
