The VSKA (say it "vis-kuh") is Century Arms' answer to the question every AK fan eventually asks: can an American-made AK hold up to hard use? Century went at the problem by machining the bolt carrier, front trunnion, and feed ramp from S7 tool steel, the same shock-resistant stuff used in jackhammer bits and chisels. The trunnion and bolt carrier are cut from billet and heat treated, and the design came out of a development program that wrapped up in 2017. Pair that with a carburized 4140 steel bolt and a 4150 chrome-moly barrel, and you've got a rifle built around the parts that take the most abuse.
The RAK-1 Enhanced Trigger Group is a real bright spot here. It breaks cleaner than the gritty triggers a lot of folks associate with stamped AKs, which makes plinking sessions and steel matches a lot more enjoyable. You also get a bolt hold-open notch on the safety lever, a handy touch for range work and showing clear. The 16.5 inch barrel wears a slant compensator on standard 14×1 LH threads, so swapping muzzle devices down the road is simple. Adjustable open sights and a 1-in-10 twist round out a setup that handles surplus-style and commercial 7.62×39 ammo without fuss.
