There's a reason the Mauser M98 action has stuck around for well over a century, and Zastava has been building on that design longer than most companies have existed. The M07 AS takes that proven controlled-feed action and wraps it in a purpose-built precision package chambered in .308 Win. The heart of the rifle is a 26 inch cold hammer forged chrome-vanadium barrel in a heavy profile, cut with a 1:10 twist and six grooves. That combination stabilizes the full range of common .308 bullet weights and holds its point of impact through longer strings of fire, since all that steel takes its sweet time heating up.
The polygonal receiver comes with a Picatinny rail machined right in, so there are no separate bases to work loose over time. Just mount your rings and glass and get to work. The fixed polymer stock adjusts for both cheek height and length of pull using inserts, which matters more than people think. Getting proper eye alignment behind a scope without craning your neck makes a real difference when you're spending a full afternoon behind the rifle. The single-stage trigger is user adjustable, and the three-position safety lets you cycle the bolt to unload with the trigger still locked out.
Feeding comes from detachable 5-round box magazines, and Zastava includes two of them along with a sling and cleaning kit. The muzzle is threaded 18×1 RH and ships with a thread protector installed, so adding a brake or other muzzle device down the road is simple. At roughly 13 pounds bare, this is not a mountain rifle, and it was never meant to be. It's a rifle for the bench, the prone mat, and steel way out past where most hunting rigs run out of steam. Zastava rates it effective out to 1,000 meters, and the .308 cartridge has the track record to back that up. If you appreciate old-school Mauser engineering dressed up for modern precision shooting, the M07 AS delivers a lot of rifle.
No, a scope and bipod are not included with this rifle. The good news is the receiver has a Picatinny rail machined directly into it, so mounting the optic of your choice is quick and there are no separate bases to fuss with. Just add rings and glass and you're set.
The safety has safe, fire, and a middle secure position. In the secure position the trigger stays locked but you can still cycle the bolt, which gives you a safer way to unload the chamber without putting the rifle in a firing condition. It's a feature borrowed from classic Mauser-pattern designs and it works well in practice.
That's exactly what it was designed for. The 26 inch cold hammer forged heavy barrel with a 1:10 twist stabilizes heavier .308 match bullets, and Zastava rates the rifle effective out to 1,000 meters. The adjustable trigger and adjustable stock also help you build a consistent position behind the scope, which is half the battle at distance.
Yes, the muzzle is threaded 18×1 RH and ships with a thread protector installed. Keep in mind that's a metric thread pitch, so you'll want a device cut for 18×1 or an appropriate adapter rather than the more common 5/8×24 found on many American .308 barrels.
