The R3D 2.0 is XS Sights' second-generation take on their popular notch-and-post night sight, built specifically for S&W M&P 2.0 Optics Ready full-size and compact pistols. Up front you get a green photoluminescent Ember Glow Dot ringing a Swiss-made tritium vial, so the front post glows bright in daylight and stays lit in the dark. The rear is blacked out and serrated to cut glare and let the front sight do the talking, which is exactly what you want when you're trying to get on target fast.
The rear sight runs bigger, brighter tritium lamps than the first-gen R3D, each wrapped in a black PVC ring that sharpens the edges and helps you tell the rear dots apart from the glowing front. The 0.170-inch wide rear notch pairs with a 0.145-inch front blade, giving you a good chunk of daylight on either side of the post for quicker alignment. There's also a ledge machined into the design for one-handed slide manipulation off a belt or boot in a pinch.
Every R3D 2.0 is CNC-machined from solid steel bar stock at the XS shop in Fort Worth, Texas. The BlackNitride finish gives you over 50 percent more corrosion resistance than standard black oxide, which matters a lot if this rides on an everyday carry gun through sweaty summers and humid days. The quench-polish-quench hardening helps them shrug off drops and hard racking, and once they're wedged in the dovetail they stay put.
XS reworked the dovetail with a lead-in edge and crush zone, so the R3D 2.0 set takes roughly 50 percent less force to press in than the older version. You can install them with a sight pusher or a hammer and punch, and if you're not comfortable doing it yourself, any local gunsmith can knock it out in a few minutes. The Glow Dot is engineered to resist cleaning chemicals and powder residue, so a quick wipe with a cloth keeps it clear.
This set (SW-R206P-6G) is cut for S&W M&P 2.0 Optics Ready full-size and compact models. Because M&P variants use different dovetails and heights, double-check that your pistol is the Optics Ready 2.0 before ordering. If you have a non-OR or Shield model, XS makes a different R3D 2.0 set for those.
You can. XS redesigned the dovetail with a lead-in edge and crush zone so the set presses in with about 50 percent less force than the original R3D. They go in with a sight pusher or a hammer and punch, though a sight pusher gives you the most control. If you'd rather not risk it, most gun shops or gunsmiths will install them quickly.
The tritium vials are self-luminous and rated to glow in low or no light for about 12 years, and XS backs them with a 12-year warranty. On top of that, the green Ember Glow Dot up front charges off ambient light to boost daytime and dusk visibility. Tritium naturally dims over its lifespan, which is normal for any night sight.
Both use the same tritium vial and Glow Dot design, so it comes down to which color your eyes pick up fastest. This set has the green front ring, which many people find easier to see in daylight. Orange is the alternative if green blends into your target backgrounds or you're partially colorblind to it.
