The XS Sights R3D 2.0 is the second-generation upgrade to one of the most popular tritium night sight setups for the S&W M&P platform. This standard-height set is built for M&P and M2.0 Full Size and Compact pistols (the non-optics-ready models), and it takes a traditional notch-and-post layout and makes it brighter, tougher, and quicker to pick up. The front sight combines a Swiss-made tritium vial with the proprietary Ember Glow Dot, which soaks up ambient light and glows on its own in the dark. That glowing green front dot naturally pulls your eye to the front sight, exactly where you want your focus in a defensive situation.
The rear sight is where XS really rethought things. It stays blacked out and serrated to cut glare and boost contrast against that green front dot, and the notch runs a generous 0.170 inches wide. That wider notch leaves more daylight on either side of the front post, so lining up a fast, clean sight picture is easier when the light is poor or you're moving. Paired with a 0.145-inch front post, you get a clear front-focused picture without the front blade crowding the notch.
These are CNC-machined from solid steel and finished in Black Nitride, which XS rates at roughly 50 percent better corrosion resistance than Black Oxide. That matters if you carry daily and deal with sweat, humidity, or the occasional bump and drop. The rear sight also has a machined ledge, so you can rack the slide one-handed off a belt or holster edge if you ever need to.
XS redesigned the dovetail on the 2.0 series to cut installation force by about half, which makes life easier whether you're using a sight pusher at home or handing them off to a gunsmith. The green tritium keeps glowing in low light and no light for years, and the set is backed by XS with a long tritium warranty. It's a straightforward, dependable upgrade that gives your M&P real low-light capability without changing how you shoot it.
This particular set (SW-R201P-6G) is cut for standard, non-optics-ready M&P and M2.0 Full Size and Compact pistols. If your slide is milled for a red dot, XS makes a separate optics-ready version that clears the cut. Double-check your slide before ordering so you get the right fit.
The green front sight uses a tritium vial wrapped in XS's Ember Glow Dot, which absorbs ambient light and glows on its own, making it brighter and more eye-catching than the rear. The rear sight stays blacked out with two tritium dots so your focus naturally lands on the front post. That contrast is what makes the sight picture fast to pick up in low light.
Yes, the 2.0 dovetail was redesigned to require about 50 percent less force than the original R3D, so a home install with a quality sight pusher is very doable. You can also use a punch and brass hammer if that's what you have. If you're not comfortable working on your slide, any gunsmith can knock it out quickly.
Tritium glows on its own without needing to charge, and XS backs the tritium in the R3D 2.0 with a 12-year warranty. It will gradually dim over that lifespan, which is normal for any tritium sight. For a daily carry or home-defense M&P, that's plenty of dependable low-light service.
