The XS R3D 2.0 is the second generation of one of the most popular notch-and-post night sight sets out there, and this version is cut specifically for the optics-ready HK VP9 in a suppressor height. That taller profile does two things: it clears most cans, and it lets the front and rear sit high enough to co-witness behind a red dot when you're running the VP9 OR. The green Glow Dot up front is the brightest option XS offers for low light, giving you a front sight you can find in a hurry when the lighting goes sideways.
The heart of this set is the front sight. It measures 0.145 inches wide, which is a touch wider than a lot of competing posts, and it wraps a green tritium lamp inside an Ember Glow Dot photoluminescent ring. The tritium glows on its own for years while the Glow Dot soaks up ambient light and keeps glowing in the dark. XS also runs a brighter vial up front than in the rear, so your eye naturally settles on the front sight instead of getting distracted by the rear dots. That focus downrange is exactly what you want for fast, accurate shots.
The rear is a blacked-out, serrated 0.170-inch notch with two tritium lamps and an anti-glare treatment. The wide notch leaves plenty of daylight on either side of the front post so alignment happens quick, and the serrations knock down glare in bright conditions. There's also a ledge on the rear that gives you something to catch on a belt or holster for one-handed slide manipulations.
Every sight is CNC machined from solid steel bar stock and finished in Black Nitride for corrosion resistance, which matters if you carry in humid or sweaty conditions. The 2.0 dovetail was revised so installation takes noticeably less force, making it friendly for a DIY sight pusher job or a quick trip to your gunsmith. The tritium lamps are self-luminous and rated to glow for around 12 years, so they work in low light or total darkness without needing to charge. On top of that, the green Ember Glow Dot around the front lamp absorbs ambient light and glows on its own, giving you a bright front sight during the day and after dark.
For most folks, yes. The 2.0 dovetail was reworked to require roughly 50 percent less force than the original, so a sight pusher makes it a straightforward DIY job, and a hammer and punch will also do it. XS includes red threadlocker and instructions in the kit, and their tech line can walk you through anything you're unsure about.
Both use the same tritium and Glow Dot setup, just different colors on the front ring. Green is the brighter option in low light and gives the strongest glow intensity, while orange tends to pop better against bright daylight backgrounds. If your priority is maximum low-light visibility, green is the way to go.
