Factory bead sights on the Remington 870 get the job done, but they're small, dark, and slow to pick up when the light fades. The XS Big Dot Tritium fixes that in a big way. At 0.188 inches across, it's one of the largest front sights you'll find, and that convex face grabs your eye fast whether you're running the gun at the range, in the deer woods, or clearing a room in the middle of the night.
What makes the Yellow version worth a look is the dual-illumination setup. A self-powered tritium vial sits at the center for a steady green glow in full dark, while XS's photoluminescent Glow Dot ring soaks up ambient light and keeps glowing as dusk turns to night, well before it's dark enough to see the tritium on its own. XS found that yellow glows the brightest in low light, so if your priority is a front sight that lights up when the sun goes down, this is the color to grab. The convex dot's extra surface area means it charges harder and holds that charge longer.
The size is the whole point. A big, round dot lets you shoot with both eyes open and drives fast target acquisition, which is exactly what you want on a defensive scattergun. It's also a real help for aging eyes or anyone whose vision isn't what it used to be. The tritium faces you and not your target, so you're not lighting yourself up the way a laser would.
This is the pedestal model, built to sit on Remington 870 barrels that have a bead screwed into a small platform on top of the barrel. It fits factory bead diameters from .125 to .140 inches, and installation is a genuine ten-minute job. Degrease the bead with alcohol, fill the cavity on the underside with any two-part epoxy, press it down over your existing bead, and let it cure. No drilling, no gunsmith. Just note this is a standalone front sight and won't work with Ghost Ring rear assemblies. The sight is CNC machined from solid steel bar stock and blued, and the tritium carries a 12-year glow warranty.

If your 870 has the bead mounted flat on the barrel with no pedestal, you'll want the plain-barrel version instead, so check your setup before ordering.
Installation is a straightforward do-it-yourself job that takes about ten minutes. Degrease your existing bead with alcohol, fill the cavity on the underside of the Big Dot with any two-part epoxy, press it down over the bead, and let it fully cure. No drilling, tapping, or gunsmith required.
XS found that yellow glows the brightest in low-light conditions, while orange contrasts best in bright daylight. If your main concern is a front sight that lights up as dusk turns to dark, yellow is the way to go. Both use the same tritium and Glow Dot combination.
No batteries needed. The tritium vial self-illuminates and the Glow Dot charges off ambient light, so the sight works day or night with zero maintenance. The tritium glow carries a 12-year warranty, and the glow will slowly dim over the life of the sight as tritium naturally does.
