It's a one-piece Picatinny base built for the Winchester Model 70 pre-64 standard action and post-64 long action, giving you a clean, modern mounting platform on a classic rifle. The 20 MOA of built-in elevation is the real draw here, letting you squeeze more adjustment out of your scope's internal travel so you can stretch out to longer distances without running out of dial.
This is the Heavy Duty version, machined from solid 7075 T6 aircraft-grade aluminum with a matte black Type III hardcoat anodized finish. It runs about .100" lower than EGW's lightweight bases, which keeps your optic tucked closer to the centerline of the bore for a more natural cheek weld and improved accuracy. The full-width cross slots are cut to MIL-STD 1913 spec at +/- .002", so your rings sit where they should and you get real flexibility to fine-tune eye relief.
This base is drilled to line up with the factory scope mount holes on the receiver, using the .860" hole spacing found on the front and rear receiver rings. The center spread measures 3.805" with an overall length of 7.064". It works with any standard Picatinny or Weaver scope rings, so you're not locked into one brand. As always, it's smart to measure your receiver hole spacing before ordering to confirm you've got a long action and not a short action, WSM, or WSSM.
Installation is straightforward. The rail ships with socket head Torx screws and the matching wrench, and EGW recommends torquing to 20 inch-pounds with a drop of blue Loctite to keep everything locked down through recoil. It's a one-time setup that gives you a rock-solid foundation for whatever glass you want to run on your Model 70.
This base is made specifically for the Winchester Model 70 pre-64 standard action and post-64 long action, which uses a .860" hole spacing and a 3.805" center spread. It will not fit the short action, WSM, or WSSM versions, which EGW makes as separate rails. Measuring the distance between the two center receiver holes is the best way to confirm you have a long action before ordering.
The 20 MOA of built-in elevation tilts the rail slightly forward, which gives your scope more usable internal elevation travel. That extra adjustment range makes it easier to dial in at longer distances without maxing out your scope's turret. If most of your shooting is close to mid-range, a 0 MOA base works fine, but the 20 MOA is the better call for reaching way out there.
