Description

New brass rarely shows up perfect. Ship it in bulk and you end up with dinged necks, flat spots, and uneven inside diameters that make your first firing a gamble. The L.E. Wilson .270 Cal Expanding Mandrel is the fix. This is the .276" stainless mandrel that runs down the inside of your new .270 caliber case necks to smooth them out and bring every case to the same inside diameter before you ever seat a bullet.

The idea behind it is simple but it pays off on paper. Running an expander mandrel through new brass removes dents and gives you uniform neck tension across the whole batch, and that consistency is what leads to steadier bullet seating and tighter extreme spread and standard deviation numbers downrange. The mandrel is sized to expand the neck to just under bullet diameter, so you get a correct, repeatable grip on the bullet instead of guessing case to case.

How the .270 Expanding Mandrel Works on the Bench

This is the mandrel only, which is the interchangeable insert that threads into the L.E. Wilson Expanding Mandrel Die. The die itself uses a standard 7/8-14 reloading press and includes one mandrel when you buy it, so pick this up when you want to add .270 to a die you already own or keep a spare on hand. The mandrel is tapered up front to start the case easy, then slides along the finished .276" outside diameter until resistance drops off, letting you feel exactly when the neck is set.

Why Reloaders Keep the .276" Wilson Mandrel in the Rotation

Machined from stainless for a long service life, this is a tool that earns its spot as a dedicated case prep step. Make sure your cases are clean inside and out before you run them, and a touch of light oil between sessions keeps everything moving smoothly. For anyone loading .270 Winchester or similar .277 bullet cartridges and chasing better consistency, this mandrel is one of the quieter upgrades that shows up at the target.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the .270 expanding mandrel come with the die?

No, this listing is for the mandrel only. It is the interchangeable .276" stainless insert that fits the L.E. Wilson Expanding Mandrel Die, which is sold separately. The die itself comes with one mandrel of your chosen caliber, so grab this if you want to add .270 to a die you already have or keep a backup.

What does the .276" mandrel actually do to my brass?

It runs down the inside of the case neck to iron out dents and flat spots common in new, bulk-shipped brass, then brings every case to the same inside diameter. The mandrel expands the neck to just under bullet diameter for a correct, repeatable grip. The payoff is more uniform neck tension, which generally means more consistent bullet seating and tighter ES/SD numbers.

Can I use this mandrel on calibers other than .270?

This specific mandrel is sized at .276" for .270 caliber cartridges that use .277 bullets, such as .270 Winchester. For other calibers you would simply swap in the matching mandrel, since the Wilson die accepts interchangeable mandrels. Each caliber needs its own correctly sized mandrel to get the right neck tension.

Any tips for getting the best results with the Wilson mandrel?

Clean your cases inside and out before running them, since grit can scratch the mandrel and throw off consistency. The front taper starts the case easy, and you push until resistance drops off to know the neck is set. A little light oil between sessions keeps the stainless mandrel sliding smoothly over time.
