The straight English stock and slim splinter forend are cut from grade A American walnut with an oil rubbed finish, and the double triggers sit inside a long tang trigger guard that adds strength through the wrist of the stock. Matte blued steel on the receiver and barrels keeps the whole package looking traditional and understated, the way a double gun should.
At 6.1 pounds, this is a gun you can tote all day behind a dog without thinking about it. The 28 inch monoblock barrels wear a swamp rib, a low profile classic that keeps your cheek down on the stock and your eyes on the bird, finished off with a simple brass bead up front. The mechanical double trigger setup fires the right barrel with the front trigger and the left with the rear, so you can pick your choke on the fly, and the tang mounted safety falls right under your thumb for quick, natural operation. Extractors lift spent hulls just enough to pluck them out and pocket them, which keeps the field clean and your empties saved for reloading.
The 3 inch chambers give the little .410 more reach than you might expect, and the five included extended choke tubes (Skeet, Improved Cylinder, Modified, Improved Modified, and Full) run on the widely available Yildiz thread pattern, so aftermarket options are easy to find. Screw in Skeet and IC for the clays course, or step up to Modified and Full when the birds are flushing wild. Built on a size specific frame rather than a scaled down 20 gauge action, the Orion .410 balances and handles like a proper small bore double. It is a fine first double gun, a great teaching gun, and a genuinely fun way to make wing shooting a challenge again.
This model uses extractors rather than automatic ejectors. When you break the action, the spent hulls lift just enough to pull them out by hand, so nothing goes flying into the grass. Plenty of hunters prefer it that way since it keeps empties in your pocket instead of on the ground.
The front trigger fires the right barrel and the rear trigger fires the left barrel, and the mechanical trigger system doesn't rely on recoil to set the second barrel. Since you can run different chokes in each barrel, double triggers let you instantly choose a tighter or more open pattern depending on the shot. It takes a little getting used to if you've only run single triggers, but the straight English grip makes sliding between them feel natural.
It ships with five extended tubes: Skeet, Improved Cylinder, Modified, Improved Modified, and Full. They use the Yildiz choke system, which is a common thread pattern, and aftermarket tubes are available from makers like Briley. That covers everything from close-in skeet work to tight patterns for wild flushing birds.
Weatherby builds the Orion SXS on gauge-specific frames, so the .410 gets a properly proportioned action instead of a small bore barrel set hung on a bigger receiver. That's a big part of why it comes in at 6.1 pounds and handles like a true small bore double. It makes a noticeable difference in balance and all day carry comfort.
