Anyone who has packed a rifle up a mountain knows the math: every ounce you carry costs you something by day five. Weatherby built the Mark V Backcountry Guide Ti to win that math problem. The titanium version of the Mark V action shaves roughly half a pound compared to steel while keeping the strength that action is known for, and titanium shrugs off moisture and rough weather without complaint. Chambered in 7mm PRC, this rifle weighs in at 5.7 pounds bare, which is remarkable for a cartridge with this much reach.
The Guide series was designed around a 22 inch BSF carbon fiber barrel, a couple inches shorter than traditional magnum offerings. BSF starts with a 416R stainless match blank, then sleeves it in carbon fiber loaded under tension, giving you rigidity and fast cooling without the weight of a full profile steel tube. The shorter length makes the rifle noticeably easier to handle in timber and on horseback, and it keeps overall length manageable if you plan to run a suppressor on the 5/8-24 threads. From the factory, the muzzle wears a machined titanium Accubrake ST with 30 symmetrical ports that takes real bite out of the 7mm PRC's recoil.
The Blacktooth is one of the lightest production carbon fiber stocks out there, and it earns its keep beyond the scale. A carbon fiber bedding block engages the front recoil lug and pushes recoil energy into the shell of the stock, and the 3DHex recoil pad uses a collapsing honeycomb lattice to turn a sharp kick into more of a push. Spartan Precision adapters come installed from the factory, so ultralight Spartan bipods and tripods click right in without gunsmithing. Each stock is hand painted with carbide black sponge accents, so no two look quite alike.
An externally adjustable TriggerTech trigger breaks clean with zero creep and can be tuned down to 2.5 pounds, and the fluted bolt cycles on a fast 54 degree throw. Weatherby backs the whole package with their sub-MOA three shot guarantee using factory or premium ammo. Feed it good 7mm PRC loads and this rifle will hold up its end of the deal well past where most hunters would ever take a shot.
The 7mm PRC version comes in at 5.7 pounds bare, thanks to the titanium action, carbon fiber barrel, and the Peak 44 Blacktooth stock. Add a lightweight scope and rings and you can keep a fully rigged setup around 7 pounds, which is impressive for a cartridge with this much long-range capability.
You give up a little velocity compared to a 24 or 26 inch tube, typically in the neighborhood of 25 to 40 fps per inch, but the 7mm PRC has enough case capacity that it still delivers plenty of downrange performance for hunting. The tradeoff buys you a rifle that is far easier to maneuver in brush and much more practical with a suppressor attached to the 5/8-24 threaded muzzle.
