Description

There's a reason mountain hunters keep gravitating toward the Mark V Backcountry Guide. Weatherby built this rifle around one simple idea: give you serious long-range horsepower in a package that won't wear you out on the climb. This .300 PRC version wears a 22 inch BSF carbon fiber barrel, a couple inches shorter than typical magnum offerings, which makes it noticeably easier to maneuver in thick timber and a natural fit for running a suppressor on the 5/8×24 threaded muzzle. Weatherby ships it with their Accubrake ST installed, and between that brake and the 3D printed 3DHex recoil pad, the .300 PRC feels far more civilized than the ballistics would suggest.

What Sets the Backcountry Guide Apart

The stock is where this rifle earns its name. Peak 44's Blacktooth carbon fiber stock is among the lightest and stiffest on the market, with a carbon fiber bedding block that routes recoil force straight into the shell of the stock. The forend comes with two Spartan Precision gunsmithing adapters installed from the factory, so clipping on a Spartan bipod or tripod takes seconds with no extra hardware. Exposed carbon weave with olive green and tan sponge-pattern accents gives each stock its own look, since they're finished by hand.

A Mark V Action Built for the Long Haul

Under the hood you get the proven Mark V action with a deep spiral-fluted bolt, a fast 54 degree bolt throw that keeps your knuckles clear of the scope, and a removable bolt knob if you want to swap in your own. The adjustable TriggerTech trigger breaks clean and lets you dial the pull weight to your liking. Metalwork is coated in Graphite Black Cerakote to shrug off weather, and the hinged floorplate holds 3+1 rounds of .300 PRC.

Every Mark V is backed by Weatherby's sub-MOA guarantee with factory or premium ammo, and this one is built at their Sheridan, Wyoming facility. For elk, mule deer, or any hunt where the truck is a long way behind you, this is a rifle that pulls its weight without adding much of its own.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Mark V Backcountry Guide come with a scope or sights?

No, this rifle ships without sights or an optic. The receiver is set up for Mark V pattern scope bases, so you'll want to pick up bases or a rail along with rings for your scope. Given what the .300 PRC can do at distance, a quality long-range optic is worth the investment here.

Can I run a suppressor on the Backcountry Guide in .300 PRC?

Yes, that's part of the design intent. The muzzle is threaded 5/8×24, and the factory Accubrake ST spins off so you can mount a can directly. The shorter 22 inch barrel keeps overall length manageable even with a suppressor attached.

How accurate is the Weatherby Backcountry Guide?

Every Mark V rifle carries Weatherby's sub-MOA guarantee, meaning a 3-shot group under an inch at 100 yards from a cold barrel with Weatherby factory or premium ammunition. The BSF carbon fiber barrel and TriggerTech trigger do a lot of the heavy lifting there. Reports from the field consistently back up the guarantee with well-matched loads.

Does this rifle use a detachable magazine?

No, it feeds from an internal magazine with a hinged floorplate, holding 3 rounds plus one in the chamber. Many mountain hunters prefer this setup since there's no detachable mag to rattle, lose, or snag on gear. The floorplate drops open for quick and safe unloading.
