This Mark V Backcountry 2.0 Ti is a genuine left-hand titanium action chambered in 338 WBY RPM, the big bore cartridge Weatherby designed specifically to run through the trim six lug Mark V receiver. The result is real magnum energy in a rifle that carries like a mountain gun, which is exactly the point when the elk are living three drainages past where the trail ends.
The receiver is machined titanium, left raw so you can see the tooling work, and it shaves meaningful weight compared to a steel action without giving up strength. The 24 inch barrel wears a thin fluted contour and a graphite black Cerakote finish that shrugs off wet weather. Underneath it all sits the Peak 44 Blacktooth carbon fiber stock with grey and white sponge accents, one of the lightest production stocks you can get, tipping the scales at under 20 ounces. Spiral fluting on the bolt trims a bit more weight and cuts bearing surface, so the short 54 degree throw runs smooth and fast.
A hard-hitting cartridge in a light rifle would normally be a rough combination, and Weatherby clearly thought that through. The threaded muzzle comes fitted with an Accubrake ST, with 30 symmetrical ports that bleed off recoil, and the 3DHEX recoil pad uses 3D printed collapsing chambers to stretch the recoil pulse into more of a push than a punch. Between the two, this rifle is far more pleasant to shoot than the weight and chambering suggest.
The adjustable TriggerTech trigger breaks clean with no creep, the receiver is drilled and tapped for optics, and the internal magazine feeds 4+1 through a hinged floorplate. Weatherby backs every Mark V with a sub-MOA guarantee using factory or premium ammunition, so the accuracy side of the equation is covered before you ever leave the bench.
The 338 WBY RPM was developed by Weatherby to deliver big bore magnum performance through the compact six lug Mark V action. It is a strong choice for elk, moose, and bear, and it proved efficient enough in testing to hold its velocity well. With the 24 inch barrel on this model, you are getting everything the cartridge has to offer.
Yes. This is a dedicated left-hand action with the bolt handle and ejection port set up for southpaw use, not a right-hand gun with workarounds. The Peak 44 Blacktooth stock is comfortable from the left shoulder and the 54 degree bolt throw keeps cycling quick without your hand crowding the scope.
Less than you would expect. The Accubrake ST uses 30 symmetrical ports to vent gases and knock down recoil significantly, and the 3DHEX recoil pad has 3D printed internal chambers that collapse progressively to spread the impulse over more time. The combination turns a sharp magnum kick into something much more manageable at the bench and in the field.
It does. Weatherby guarantees Mark V rifles will shoot a three shot group of .99 inches or better at 100 yards from a cold barrel when using Weatherby factory or premium ammunition.
