There's a reason this rifle and this cartridge share a name. The 7mm Backcountry was engineered to push heavy 7mm bullets to magnum speeds out of a 20-inch barrel, and the Mark V Backcountry 2.0 Ti was built to carry that performance up a mountain without punishing you for it. The result is a rig that weighs around 4.9 pounds bare, runs a 170-grain bullet near 3,000 fps, and leaves plenty of room on the muzzle for a suppressor thanks to the 5/8×24 threading. That short barrel is not a compromise here. The cartridge was designed around it.
The titanium six-lug Mark V action is the headline, cutting serious ounces compared to steel while keeping the strength Weatherby actions are known for. Peak 44's Blacktooth carbon fiber stock weighs just 19 ounces, making it one of the lightest production stocks you can get, and the fluted barrel and skeletonized bolt knob trim things down even further. Grey and white sponge pattern accents over exposed carbon fiber give it a clean, purposeful look, and Graphite Black Cerakote on the metalwork shrugs off weather and pack straps alike.
Light rifles in fast chamberings usually make you pay at the bench, but Weatherby stacked the deck in your favor. The Accubrake ST cuts felt recoil by up to 53 percent with its 30 symmetrical ports, and the 3DHEX recoil pad uses 3D-printed collapsing voids to stretch out the recoil impulse and soften the hit. The externally adjustable TriggerTech trigger breaks with zero creep and minimal overtravel, exactly what you want when the shot window is short.
The receiver comes drilled and tapped with no sights, so mount the glass that fits your hunts. With a 4+1 capacity, 1:8 twist stabilizing today's high-BC bullets, and Weatherby's sub-MOA accuracy guarantee behind it, this is the rifle for hunts where every ounce and every shot counts.
This is where the cartridge shines. Its Peak Alloy steel case handles higher pressures than brass, so 170-grain loads run right around 3,000 fps from a 20-inch barrel, which is territory that used to require a 24-inch magnum. Heavier 195-grain loads still push about 2,850 fps, so you give up very little by going short.
Yes, that's a big part of the appeal. The barrel is threaded 5/8×24, so you can remove the Accubrake ST and spin on a can. Since the 7mm Backcountry was designed to hit full velocity from 20 inches, adding a suppressor still keeps overall length shorter than a traditional magnum with a bare 26-inch barrel.
It's far more pleasant than you'd expect for a sub-5-pound rifle. The Accubrake ST cuts felt recoil by up to 53 percent, and the 3DHEX recoil pad uses collapsing internal voids to spread the impulse out over time. Most folks find it very comfortable braked, and it settles down further once you add a scope and sling.
It does. Weatherby guarantees Mark V rifles will print a 3-shot group of .99 inches or better at 100 yards from a cold barrel with Weatherby factory or premium ammunition, within two years of purchase for the original owner. The TriggerTech trigger and stiff carbon fiber stock make that guarantee very achievable in the field.
