Weatherby teamed up with the HUSH crew to build a hunting rifle that comes out of the box the way most of us would set one up anyway, and this 280 Ackley Improved version might be the sweet spot of the whole lineup. The 22-inch fluted barrel wears a 1:9 twist that handles the heavy, high-BC bullets the 280 AI was made for, and the 1/2×28 threaded muzzle ships with an Accubrake installed. Prefer to run a suppressor? Spin the brake off and you are ready to go quiet. The barrel, receiver, bolt, and bolt knob are all finished in graphite black Cerakote, so weather and pack straps will not chew it up.
The Model 307 is Weatherby's most open platform, a two-lug, fully cylindrical action that accepts a huge range of 700-pattern stocks, triggers, rails, and bottom metal. The bolt breaks down without tools for easy field cleaning and uses an M16-style extractor for positive extraction. Feeding runs through Magpul bottom metal with a 5-round detachable Magpul magazine, and the externally adjustable TriggerTech Field trigger gives you a crisp, zero-creep break you can tune to your liking. Like every Model 307, it carries Weatherby's sub-MOA guarantee with factory or premium ammo.
The stock wears a hydrodipped HUSH camo finish over a lightweight vertical grip design with an adjustable cheekpiece and adjustable length of pull, so getting proper eye alignment behind a big scope takes minutes, not a trip to a gunsmith. A Peak 44 Picatinny rail comes ready for your optic, and the Peak 44 Arca/Pic forend adapter means tripods, bipods, and other accessories clamp right on.
The 280 AI gives you near 7mm magnum performance with noticeably less recoil and better barrel life, which makes it a superb all-around choice for deer, antelope, and elk. At 7.5 pounds with a 42-inch overall length, this rifle carries well in the mountains and settles down nicely for longer shots. Weatherby backs every Model 307 with a sub-MOA guarantee, meaning a 3-shot group of .99 inches or less at 100 yards from a cold barrel using Weatherby factory or premium ammunition. The TriggerTech Field trigger with its zero-creep break and the free-floated fluted barrel do a lot of the heavy lifting there.
It is a proven one. The 280 AI pushes heavy 7mm bullets fast enough to stay effective on elk at practical hunting ranges while recoiling noticeably less than the 7mm magnums. Paired with this rifle's 1:9 twist and adjustable stock, it makes a very capable all-around Western big game setup.
