There has always been a bit of a divide between chassis rifles and mountain rifles. Chassis guns give you adjustability and repeatable accuracy, but most of them weigh a ton. The 307 Alpine MDT splits the difference. Weatherby dropped their newest action, the Model 307, into MDT's HNT26 carbon fiber chassis, a hunting-specific chassis that weighs a scant 26 ounces on its own. The result is a .300 Win Mag that behaves like a precision rig at the bench but still makes sense on your back at 10,000 feet.
The Model 307 is a two-lug, fully cylindrical action designed to play nice with the huge aftermarket of 700-pattern stocks, triggers, rails, and mounts, making it the most open platform Weatherby has ever built. The three-piece bolt strips down without tools for field cleaning, and an M16-style extractor keeps extraction positive when it counts. Feeding comes from a detachable AICS-pattern magazine, so spares are easy to find. It ships with a TriggerTech Field trigger that breaks with zero creep and adjusts externally down to 2.5 pounds, and every 307 carries Weatherby's guarantee of a sub-MOA three-shot group at 100 yards with quality factory ammo.
The 26-inch spiral fluted barrel gives .300 Win Mag the bore length it needs to stretch its legs, and it comes threaded with Weatherby's Accubrake to knock felt recoil down considerably. The chassis has an adjustable cheekpiece and length of pull so you can dial in fit behind a scope, plus an integrated ARCA rail up front for tripod work. Fold the buttstock and the whole rifle shrinks from 48.25 inches down to just over 36, which makes strapping it to a pack far less awkward. Graphite Black Cerakote covers the barrel, receiver, and bolt for weather resistance, and the whole thing is built at Weatherby's shop in Sheridan, Wyoming. For elk country, long ridge-to-ridge shots, or a do-it-all magnum that pulls double duty at the range, this one is tough to argue with.
Largely, yes. The Model 307 action was designed around the 700 footprint, so it works with most aftermarket 700-pattern stocks, triggers, rails, and bases. Weatherby considers it the most open platform in their lineup, which makes future upgrades simple.
Folding the MDT HNT26 buttstock takes the rifle from 48.25 inches down to about 36.25 inches, a reduction of over 9 inches. That makes a real difference when you are strapping the rifle to a pack for a long hike into elk or mule deer country.
Yes. Every Model 307 rifle is guaranteed by Weatherby to shoot a three-shot group of .99 inch or less at 100 yards from a cold barrel using Weatherby factory or premium ammunition, within two years of verified purchase by the original owner.
You can. The 26-inch barrel is threaded and the included Accubrake spins off, leaving standard threads for a suppressor or another muzzle device. Just keep in mind a can adds length to what is already a 26-inch magnum barrel, though the folding stock helps offset that for transport.
