There aren't many rifles that fold up 9 inches shorter, weigh next to nothing, and still shoot like a precision rig, but that's exactly the lane the Weatherby 307 Alpine MDT SB lives in. This one is chambered in .22 Creedmoor, a fast, flat cartridge that has become a favorite for coyotes and long-range varmint work, and it wears a 16 inch fluted barrel with a muzzle brake already installed. Short barrel, big cartridge, folding stock. It's a rifle built for guys who hike in far and want something that rides quietly on a pack until it's time to go to work.
The chassis is where this rifle really separates itself. MDT built the HNT26 as their first purpose-built hunting chassis, and it comes in at just 26 ounces thanks to a magnesium alloy core with carbon fiber forend, grip, and buttstock. You still get the stuff chassis rifles are known for, like V-block bedding, adjustable length of pull and comb, and AICS magazine compatibility. The forend has an integral ARCA rail, so clipping into a tripod takes seconds, and the folding buttstock is what trims over 9 inches off the overall length for travel and storage.
Weatherby designed the Model 307 as a two-lug, fully cylindrical action with a Rem 700 style footprint, which means the aftermarket is wide open if you ever want to swap triggers, rails, or stocks down the road. The bolt strips down without tools for easy cleaning in the field, and an M16 style extractor keeps ejection positive. Out of the box you get a TriggerTech Field trigger with a true zero-creep break that adjusts externally down to 2.5 pounds, plus a Picatinny rail up top ready for glass.
Graphite Black Cerakote covers the barrel, receiver, and bolt for weather resistance, and the 3+1 capacity with a two-position safety keeps things simple. If you've been looking for a compact chassis rifle that doesn't punish you on the walk in, this one deserves a hard look.
Folding the buttstock on the MDT HNT26 chassis trims more than 9 inches off the overall length. With the 16 inch barrel, that makes this one of the most packable precision bolt guns Weatherby offers. It stows nicely on a pack frame or in a shorter case for travel.
The HNT26 chassis accepts AICS-pattern detachable magazines, which are about as easy to find as any precision rifle mag out there. The rifle ships set up for a 3+1 capacity. Higher capacity AICS mags will also fit if you want more rounds on board at the range.
Yes, it comes from the factory with a TriggerTech Field trigger that adjusts externally down to 2.5 pounds. It has a zero-creep break with very short overtravel, so most folks never feel the need to swap it. If you do want something different, the Model 307 action uses a Rem 700 style footprint, so aftermarket triggers drop right in.
The .22 Creedmoor is a speed demon that shines on coyotes, prairie dogs, and long-range steel, pushing heavy .22 caliber bullets fast and flat with very little recoil. You give up some velocity with a 16 inch tube compared to a 22 or 24 inch barrel, but the tradeoff is a much handier rifle, and the cartridge still has plenty left for practical field distances. The threaded muzzle with factory brake also makes it a natural host for a suppressor.
