There are not many soft-shooting semi autos built for smaller-framed hunters, and the TriStar Viper G2 Compact in .410 bore fills that gap nicely. The gas system cycles everything from light target loads up to 3 inch field loads while bleeding off recoil in the process, and since the .410 is already a gentle round, this is about as comfortable as a shotgun gets. That matters a lot when you are putting a first gun in a kid's hands, because a new shooter who is not flinching is a new shooter who is hitting clays and having fun.
The 24 inch barrel is chrome lined for easy cleanup and long-term durability, topped with a vent rib and a fiber optic front sight that picks up light well in timber or on the clays course. TriStar threads the muzzle for Beretta/Benelli Mobil chokes and includes three tubes, Improved Cylinder, Modified, and Full, along with a choke box and wrench, so you can tighten up patterns for squirrels and rabbits or open them up for close flushes. Capacity is 5+1, a shot plug comes in the box for bird hunting, and a magazine cut-off lets you swap the chambered shell without emptying the magazine.
The shortened synthetic stock and forearm wear Realtree Advantage Timber camo with TriStar's soft touch coating, which gives it a grippy, comfortable feel even with cold or wet hands. A rubber recoil pad and included shim kit let you tweak the fit as a young hunter grows, and sling swivel studs come standard so it is ready for a strap on long walks. At just over 37 inches overall, it carries easily and mounts fast for shorter arms.
TriStar tests the Viper G2 platform to 5,000 rounds for endurance and backs it with a five-year warranty. For a first shotgun that a kid will not outgrow overnight, or a lightweight .410 for the small game woods, this one checks the boxes without fuss.
It is one of the better options out there for exactly that. The .410 bore is already light on recoil, and the gas-operated action softens it even further, so new shooters can focus on fundamentals instead of bracing for a kick.
