There is something about a .410 semi-auto that just makes shooting fun again, and the TriStar Viper G2 nails the formula. This is a gas-operated autoloader with a 3-inch chamber, so it runs everything from light target loads to stout 3-inch hunting shells, and the gas system takes what little recoil the .410 produces and softens it even further. At 5.8 pounds it carries all day without complaint, whether you are working a hedgerow for rabbits or covering ground on a squirrel hunt.
The 28-inch barrel is chrome-lined for corrosion resistance and easy cleanup, topped with a vent rib, matted sight plane, and a fiber optic front sight that grabs your eye fast in low light or against busy cover. Choke threading is the Beretta/Benelli Mobil pattern, which means aftermarket tubes are everywhere if you want to branch out. TriStar includes Improved Cylinder, Modified, and Full tubes along with a choke box and wrench, so you are covered from close-flushing quail to longer pokes at doves right out of the box.
The black synthetic stock and forend wear TriStar's SoftTouch coating, a slightly tacky rubberized finish that stays grippy with cold or wet hands. A rubber recoil pad and included shim kit let you tweak the fit to your build, and sling swivel studs come standard for long walks in. The tube magazine holds five rounds with the removable shot plug out, and the manual magazine cut-off is a handy touch when you want to swap the chambered shell without emptying the tube.
The .410 version of the Viper G2 has built a solid reputation among small game hunters and clays casuals who want a soft-shooting, quick-handling gun that new and experienced hands both enjoy. TriStar backs it with a five-year warranty, and the value for what you get here is tough to beat in the sub-gauge autoloader market. Fun to shoot, easy to carry, simple to maintain. That is a hard combination to argue with.
The gas system is designed to run everything from light target loads up to heavy 3-inch hunting shells. TriStar does recommend breaking the gun in with a box of stouter 3-inch loads first, and after that most light 2.5-inch loads cycle without fuss. Like any gas gun, keeping the piston and magazine tube clean helps it stay reliable.
It uses the Beretta/Benelli Mobil thread pattern, one of the most common choke systems out there. That means finding aftermarket tubes for turkey, skeet, or anything else is easy. The gun ships with Improved Cylinder, Modified, and Full tubes plus a wrench and storage box.
It is one of the better picks for that job. The .410 bore already has minimal recoil, and the gas action softens it further, so it is very comfortable for youth and beginners. The included shim kit also lets you adjust the stock fit, and at 5.8 pounds it is light enough to handle easily without feeling whippy.
SoftTouch is TriStar's rubberized coating applied over the injection-molded synthetic stock and forend. It gives the gun a slightly tacky, grippy feel that holds up well with wet or gloved hands. It also shrugs off weather and scratches better than a wood finish, which is exactly what you want in a field gun.
