The Raptor II runs on a proven gas-operated system that bleeds off a portion of each shot's pressure to cycle the action, which does double duty by soaking up felt recoil. In a 20 gauge, that adds up to a gun that stays pleasant through a full afternoon of doves or a long day breaking clays. The 3 inch chamber gives you room to step up to heavier loads when turkey season or late-season pheasants call for it, and the bolt locks open on the last round so you always know where you stand. With its blued steel, genuine walnut, 5+1 capacity, and crossbolt safety, this is a classic field gun done the modern way. It carries light, points fast, and cycles reliably, exactly what you want from a do-it-all 20 gauge semi-auto.
It runs on a gas-operated system. A pair of ports in the barrel redirect some of the shot's gas pressure to a piston that cycles the action. The practical upside is softer felt recoil compared to inertia guns, since the gas system spreads the impulse out, which is a big plus for newer or recoil-sensitive shooters.
The barrel is threaded for the Beretta/Benelli Mobil choke pattern, one of the most common thread styles out there. A set of tubes ships with the gun, and aftermarket Mobil chokes for turkey, waterfowl, or clays are easy to find from just about every choke maker.
Gas guns in this class generally handle a wide range of ammo, and the Raptor II is built to run everything from light target loads up to heavy 3 inch hunting loads. As with any new semi-auto, give it a proper cleaning and a couple boxes of shells to break in, and keep the gas system reasonably clean for best results.
It is a solid choice. The 20 gauge chambering, gas operation, and softer recoil pad combine for a very manageable shooting experience, and the redesigned stock offers a secure, natural grip. The 28 inch barrel adds a bit of length for a smoother swing, though TriStar also offers compact versions if a shorter setup fits better.
