Trijicon took everything that made the original HD Night Sights a favorite and sharpened it up for shooters who want to reach out a little farther. The big change is a thinner .122-inch front post that gives you a wider view of the target and doesn't blot out what you're aiming at past 25 yards. You still get the fast, eye-grabbing front sight that made the HD line popular, just with a sight picture that's friendlier to precision work at longer distances.
The front sight wears a bright orange photoluminescent ring around a green tritium lamp, and that lamp sits under a domed sapphire cap that focuses the glow for a front dot that reads about twice as bright as standard. The rear is a wide U-notch with two green tritium dots ringed in black, which is the trick that pulls your eye straight to the front post. In daylight it functions like a high-visibility front sight for quick pickups, and when the lights go out the three tritium lamps carry you through with no batteries required.
Durability is where Trijicon has always earned its reputation. Each tritium lamp is cushioned in silicone rubber and sealed inside an aluminum cylinder, so recoil and hard use don't rattle the glass loose. The sapphire jewel over each lamp also shrugs off cleaning solvents and spreads the light evenly. Everything is housed in steel for a solid lockup in the dovetail, so there's no worrying about plastic bending or cracking down the road.
This set drops into the Springfield Armory XD, XD(M), and XD Mod.2 (non-OSP models). The green tritium lamps carry a 12-year warranty from the date of manufacture, which is the standard you'd expect from a quality tritium sight. Trijicon recommends professional installation, and a gunsmith with a proper sight pusher will save you the headache of fighting a tight dovetail.
The main difference is the front post. The XR uses a slimmer .122-inch front sight versus the .144-inch post on the standard HD, which opens up a wider view of the target and helps at longer ranges without covering up what you're shooting at. Everything else you like about the HD line, the bright front ring and the three-dot tritium setup, carries over.
Yes. This set is cut for the Springfield Armory XD, XD(M), and XD Mod.2, excluding OSP (optics-ready) models. If your slide has a milled optic cut, double-check your specific configuration before ordering.
No batteries at all. The green tritium lamps glow on their own and are warranted for 12 years from the date of manufacture. They'll get dimmer very gradually over that span, which is normal for any tritium sight.
Trijicon recommends professional installation, and that advice is worth taking. These sights can fit tight in the dovetail, so a gunsmith with a proper sight pusher will get them seated and centered without risking the slide or the sights.
