A good compact 20 gauge autoloader is one of the smartest first shotguns you can put in someone's hands, and the Silver Eagle SE17 Compact from TR Imports gets the formula right without draining the wallet. The gas operated action bleeds off a chunk of felt recoil before it ever reaches the shoulder, which matters a lot when you're introducing a new hunter to wingshooting or just prefer a lighter kicking gun yourself. The 3 inch chamber digests both 2.75 and 3 inch shells, and the 4 round magazine keeps follow up shots on tap when the birds don't cooperate on the first swing.
The 22 inch vent rib barrel and shortened stock dimensions bring the whole package down to a size that swings naturally for youth and smaller statured folks. Shorter barrels get a bad rap for pattern performance, but with the right choke screwed in, this gun holds its own on doves, squirrels, rabbits, and clays alike. A fiber optic front sight sits up front for quick target pickup in low morning light, and the black synthetic furniture shrugs off rain, mud, and the general abuse a field gun collects over a season.
TR Imports ships this one with five choke tubes covering cylinder through full, so you can tighten up for late season birds or open things up for close flushing quail without buying anything extra. Current production uses the widely supported Mobil thread pattern, which means aftermarket options from Trulock, Carlson's, Patternmaster, and Briley are easy to find if you want a specialty turkey or waterfowl tube down the road.
This is the plainer, more affordable cousin of TR Imports' Sporter, built in the same Turkish plant with simplified components rather than cut corners. It makes a great starter gun that won't get outgrown overnight, a loaner for the duck blind, or a knockaround truck gun for small game season. Simple, soft shooting, and ready to work.
It's gas operated. The gas system uses some of the energy from each shot to cycle the action, which softens felt recoil noticeably compared to inertia guns. That's a big part of why this compact 20 gauge is such a popular pick for newer and younger hunters.
Current production SE17 models use the Mobil thread pattern, and this gun ships with five tubes covering cylinder through full. Aftermarket options are widely available from Trulock, Carlson's, Patternmaster, and Briley. One heads up, older SE17s used the Huglu thread pattern, so double check before ordering tubes for a used gun.
Both. The 3 inch chamber handles magnum loads for waterfowl or turkey, and the gas system is designed to cycle standard 2.75 inch field and target loads reliably too. Like most gas guns, it'll be happiest with quality ammo rather than the very lightest bargain loads.
It's one of the better values out there for that job. The shorter stock and 22 inch barrel fit smaller frames properly, the gas action and 20 gauge chambering keep recoil gentle, and the synthetic stock takes field abuse without complaint. The included choke set means it can grow with the shooter from clays to upland birds to waterfowl.
