Description

There's something about picking up a Thompson M1 that just doesn't get old. Auto-Ordnance has been building these since the original Tommy Gun days, and the TM1CP is their newest take on the WWII-era M1 configuration. What makes this one different from the standard TM1 is where the weight went. By swapping out the steel receiver for a high-strength aluminum alloy and replacing the wood furniture with a walnut-grain polymer, Auto-Ordnance trimmed roughly five pounds off the gun, making the TM1CP about 34.8% lighter than the traditional steel-and-wood version. That's a meaningful difference when you're at the range for a few hours.

TM1CP Lightweight M1 Thompson: Built for the Range Without Losing the Look

The polymer furniture on the TM1CP isn't trying to fool anyone into thinking it's real walnut up close, but it genuinely does capture the classic look and feel of the M1 silhouette. The walnut-grain texture gives it a warmer, more period-correct appearance than most black synthetic stocks you'll find on modern carbines. The aluminum alloy receiver carries a blued finish that complements the overall aesthetic, and the side-charging bolt handle stays true to the M1 configuration. Sights are simple and fixed: a blade up front and a fixed battle rear, keeping things period-accurate and no-fuss.

One thing worth knowing before you buy: the M1 model does not accept drum magazines. That's by design. The M1 configuration was a wartime simplification of the earlier 1928 Thompson, intentionally stripped of drum compatibility to speed up production and make the gun easier to field. If you want drum mag capability, you'd be looking at the 1927A-1 model instead. The TM1CP feeds from stick magazines only, and this model ships with one 30-round stick.

Who the Thompson TM1CP Is Really For

This carbine sits in an interesting spot. It's genuinely fun at the range, throws a big slow .45 ACP bullet, and has a personality that no modern sporting rifle can replicate. It's a solid pick for collectors who want a shootable Thompson without the heft of the all-steel version, or for anyone who just wants something different for range days. The lighter build also makes it a more comfortable plinker for extended sessions. Made in the USA by Auto-Ordnance, a division of Kahr Firearms Group, and backed by a one-year warranty.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Thompson TM1CP accept drum magazines?

No, the M1 configuration does not accept drum magazines. The M1 Thompson was a wartime simplification of the earlier 1928 model and was designed from the start to use stick magazines only. If drum magazine compatibility is important to you, the Thompson 1927A-1 series is the model to look at instead.

How much lighter is the TM1CP compared to a standard steel Thompson M1?

Auto-Ordnance rates the TM1CP at approximately 34.8% lighter than the traditional steel-and-wood TM1 model, which translates to roughly a five-pound reduction. The standard TM1 comes in around 11.5 lbs, while the TM1CP lands closer to 6.5 lbs. That's a noticeable difference in hand, especially over a long range session.

What kind of .45 ACP ammo works best in the Thompson TM1CP?

Standard 230-grain FMJ ball ammo is the go-to for Thompson M1 carbines and tends to run the most reliably. Like most blowback-operated .45 ACP carbines, these can sometimes need a few hundred rounds to break in and loosen up. Stick with quality factory ammo during that break-in period and give the gun a thorough cleaning before your first range trip.

Can I use aftermarket stick magazines with the TM1CP?

The TM1CP is designed to use Thompson-specific stick magazines in 10-round and 30-round configurations. Auto-Ordnance repositioned the magazine catch on its semi-auto Thompsons compared to original military surplus magazines, so be aware that not all surplus sticks drop right in without modification. Stick to Auto-Ordnance branded mags or verified-compatible aftermarket options for the best results.

Is the polymer furniture on the TM1CP durable, or is it a downgrade from real wood?

The walnut-grain polymer is actually more resilient than real wood in a lot of practical ways. It won't crack, warp, or absorb moisture the way wood can, and it holds up well to regular handling and range use. The tradeoff is that it won't have the same premium feel as genuine American walnut if you're comparing them side by side, but for a range carbine it's a smart and durable choice.

What warranty comes with the Thompson TM1CP?

The TM1CP includes a one-year manufacturer's warranty from Auto-Ordnance, a division of Kahr Firearms Group. Auto-Ordnance is headquartered in Greeley, Pennsylvania, and has a customer service and technical support team for warranty claims and service needs. Register your firearm with Auto-Ordnance after purchase to ensure your warranty is on file.
